Wow.

I’d seen the cover with the green dress more times to count, never knowing what the story was about. And I won’t share that here. It’s a stunning story. Raw, tender, and true in a way we all hope to one day know ourselves. It’s also a recasting of history, revealing the ugliness and falseness of fame by reflecting it back on those who grant it. A fascinating, gripping read.

It’s impossible to read this book and not hear the trumpet warning of tyranny that continually cycles, generation after generation. Those with power govern for themselves. Those without, go without.

Great information, but dense…

Had to put the book aside a few times and go back to it because the content is so dense, but I did finish and the information is amazing and life-changing. Definitely changed my caviler thinking on sleep.

An evocative journey back in time

The character journeys were sometimes fantastic and too coincidental, but I didn’t care! It was a beautifully written and delivered story that kept me gripped. I feel like I knew these people, and that’s a testament to the author. We’ll done!

Kept waiting…

The story held my interest, but mostly because I kept hoping for the stakes to rise and the characters to test themselves against true hardships. I wanted so much for the characters to have more depth and for their decisions to have real consequences, beyond violating social graces. If only! I grew up in Manhattan and always viewed Brooklyn as soulful and gritty, so was hoping for more…

The performance kept me glued. The story, however,was filled with unmet potential. It was good, but could have been great. Partially predictable, which lessened the usual tension we get in CoHo books.

A thoroughly unique experience

As you go through the book, it’s impossible, not to lament the struggles that women have, and continue to face and societies around the world. Her story and voice is completely new and fresh and really enjoyable. I only wish, given her passion for justice and equality, that she would’ve also included some characters of color. Championing the cause—the rights of marginalized people—is one thing. But reflecting them on the page would have been that much more powerful. One constructive note in an otherwise entertaining novel.
