Historia
Israel is a tiny state, and yet it has captured the world's attention, aroused its imagination, and, lately, been the object of its opprobrium. Why does such a small country speak to so many global concerns? More pressingly: Why does Israel make the decisions it does? And what lies in its future? We cannot answer these questions until we understand Israel's people and the questions and conflicts, the hopes and desires, that have animated their conversations and actions.

Balanced history of modern day Israel
Revisado: 04-25-25
An excellent brief overview of the history of Zionism and the events surrounding the establishment of Israel from the late 1800s up to the events just prior to the current Gaza war.

Historia
Rusty is a retired judge attempting a third act in life with a loving soon-to-be wife, Bea, with whom he shares both a restful home on an idyllic lake in the rural Midwest and a plaintive hope that this marriage will be his best, and his last. But the peace that’s taken Rusty so long to find evaporates when Bea’s young adult son, Aaron, living under their supervision while on probation for drug possession, disappears. If Aaron doesn’t return soon, he will be sent back to jail.

Historia
George Smiley has left the Circus. With the wreckage of the West’s spy war against the Soviets strewn across Europe, he has eyes only for a more peaceful life. And indeed, with his marriage more secure than ever, there is a rumor that George Smiley might almost be happy. But Control has other plans. A Russian agent has defected in the most unusual of circumstances, and the man he was sent to kill in London is nowhere to be found. Smiley reluctantly agrees to one last simple task: interview Szusanna, a Hungarian émigré and employee of the missing man, and sniff out a lead.

Frightening true stories
Revisado: 11-15-24
True stories of justice miscarried. Often times people think that if the defendant didn't do what the prosecution alleged, its still OK because they probably did something else. Not so! These are true stories of completely innocent people wrongly convicted due to prejudice, shoddy police work or malfeasance . Many of the cases discussed had no criminal record and their lives were ruined by the "system". Organizations like the Centurions and "Project Innocence" have saved numerous lives through their efforts. The wheels of justice grind way too slowly but at least there are those who work to keep them turning.
Michael Beck is excellent in his narration, adding drama and pathos.

What does it mean to be a Jew? At a time of worldwide crisis, venerable answers to this question have become unsettled. In To Be a Jew Today, the legal scholar and columnist Noah Feldman draws on a lifelong engagement with his religion to offer a wide-ranging interpretation of Judaism in its current varieties. How do Jews today understand their relationship to God, to Israel, and to each other—and live their lives accordingly?

Struggling with Judaism
Revisado: 05-22-24
Noah Feldman has written a book that captures and confronts most of the issues that face contemporary Jews. Clearly a lot of the struggles are his own and I’m sure that he will continue to struggle with them for years to come. I wish him success
For the rest of us (Jews and others) reading this book will give you perspective and much to think about

Historia
In spring 1936, the Holy Land erupted in a rebellion that targeted both the local Jewish community and the British Mandate authorities. The Great Arab Revolt would last three years, cost thousands of lives, and cast the trajectory for the Middle East conflict. The revolt was the crucible in which Palestinian identity coalesced, uniting all in a single struggle for independence. Yet the rebellion would ultimately turn on itself. British forces' aggressive counterinsurgency took care of the rest, finally quashing the uprising on the eve of World War II.

Revisado: 04-03-24
The Great Revolt of 1936 is an important piece of history to understand contemporary Arab (Palestinian) vs Jewish (Israeli) history. The narration here is mechanical (probably AI) is horrible. I had to listen at 1.5 speed

Historia
For most of the last hundred years, Biloxi was known for its beaches, resorts, and seafood industry. But it had a darker side. It was also notorious for corruption and vice, everything from gambling, prostitution, bootleg liquor, and drugs to contract killings. The vice was controlled by small cabal of mobsters, many of them rumored to be members of the Dixie Mafia.

Historia
On January 28, 1742, a ramshackle vessel of patched-together wood and cloth washed up on the coast of Brazil. Inside were thirty emaciated men, barely alive, and they had an extraordinary tale to tell. They were survivors of His Majesty’s Ship the Wager, a British vessel that had left England in 1740 on a secret mission during an imperial war with Spain. While the Wager had been chasing a Spanish treasure-filled galleon known as “the prize of all the oceans,” it had wrecked on a desolate island off the coast of Patagonia.

The Wager starts off a bit slow giving a lengthy description of sea life in the mid 18th century Nevertheless even that portion was insightful
Once the tale of the shipwreck and castaways begins the story is gripping and one can’t help but think “what would I have done” in similar circumstances

Historia
By following the struggle for survival of one small-town hospital, and the patients who walk, or are carried, through its doors, The Hospital takes listeners into the world of the American medical industry in a way no audiobook has done before. Americans are dying sooner, and living in poorer health. Alexander argues that no plan will solve America’s health crisis until the deeper causes of that crisis are addressed.

As a physician in an independent community hospital that was eventually absorbed into another larger system I could identify with much of this story. The stories of the individuals related here are heart breaking and bring to light the crisis we face in this country regarding health care and its associated costs

Historia
California girl Lola has her life all set up: business degree, handsome fiancé, fast track career, when suddenly, without warning, everything tragically implodes. After years fruitlessly searching for love, marriage, and children, she decides to seek spirituality and meaning far outside the parameters of modern life in the insular, ultraorthodox enclave of Boro Park, Brooklyn. There, fate brings her to the dysfunctional home of newly-widowed Jacob, a devout Torah scholar, whose life is also in turmoil, and whose small children ache for the kindness of a womanly touch.

Would be better with a different narrator
Revisado: 10-05-23
A very good story of life in the Orthodox "yeshiva" world and how a sincere baal tesuva (religious returnee) tries to fit in. Unfortunately the narrator tires to put on some sort of a Yiddish/ European accent for many of the Orthodox characters. Its not believable and detracts from her otherwise good performance. Likewise her pronunciation of many hebrew, Jewish terms comes off as inauthentic.
