Historia
What if the Western world does not have its ultimate origins in a single cultural bloodline but rather a messy bramble of ancestors and influences? As battles over privilege, identity and prejudice rock the cultural wars, it's never been more important to understand how the concept of The West came to be. This book tells a bold, empowering new story of how the idea of the West was created, how it has been used to justify imperialism and racism, and also why it's still a powerful ideological tool to understand our world.

feeling embarrassed on behalf of the author
Revisado: 07-07-23
Easy the worst book in my collection of 100+ books.
For good measure, I enjoy Sweeney's articles on archaeology and follow her on Twitter, so when I read the book review in the Guardian, ending in "people will enjoy this clever and thought provoking account" it prompted me to purchase the book straight away.
*What a disappointment*
I somehow managed to listen all the way through this angry, moralistic disquisition, hoping for that thought provoking finale that never was.
The book did leave me feeling embarrassed on behalf of the author.
I tried to understand why Sweeney would write a book like this and the only thing I could think of (assumption) is that she has some serious beef with western culture and that she started writing before she was ready.
To me it's just another author who feels a need to bite the hand that feeds it.
I honestly tried to find the cleverness in the book or even a hint of a deeper meaning anywhere (other than an aggressive dislike for Europe and everything it stands for)
Would definitely not recommend. I'll stick to her Twitter feeds from now on

Money - investing, personal finance, and business decisions - is typically taught as a math-based field, where data and formulas tell us exactly what to do. But in the real world people don’t make financial decisions on a spreadsheet. They make them at the dinner table, or in a meeting room, where personal history, your own unique view of the world, ego, pride, marketing, and odd incentives are scrambled together. In The Psychology of Money, award-winning author Morgan Housel shares 19 short stories exploring the strange ways people think about money.

A must read for young people
Revisado: 11-19-21
Having bought this book by accident, and feeling bummed for wasting a credit, I gave it a listen. The book totally blew me away at chapter one. It's packed with such valuable information that I demanded that my son reads it. It's also an easy listen. What a great present I gave myself. And well done author!

misleading title
Revisado: 09-06-21
I struggled through the first three chapters and just had to put it aside.
The AI reading this book sounds so depressing that I can't imagine anyone benefitting from it.
The imaginary examples seem to be for people who suffer from depression. Therefore the title is misleading.
I don't suffer from depression myself, but after listening to the first part of this book I definitely feel less cheerful

really good but slightly unsatisfying
Revisado: 03-27-17
i read it in one go. it's really interesting .. I obviously need to go to burning man one day. and although i am stoked to work on myself, the book has left me without a clue as to where to go to. unless it is the 400 dollars i can pay to follow one of their courses. so great book, a tat unsatisfying if it was written just to get me on their course.

Good bits, much talk about god
Revisado: 08-29-16
The narrator has a nice voice, but why so much talk about the bible and god? It's either difficult to understand, philosophical or religeous. I bought this book because it covers quantum mechanics, which it does. I liked the 1st and the 3rd section and some other parts.

The Earth teems with life: in its oceans, forests, skies, and cities. Yet there's a black hole at the heart of biology. We do not know why complex life is the way it is, or, for that matter, how life first began. In The Vital Question, award-winning author and biochemist Nick Lane radically reframes evolutionary history, putting forward a solution to conundrums that have puzzled generations of scientists.

Historia
How can great companies do everything right - identify real customer needs, deliver excellent innovations, beat their competitors to market - and still fail? The sad truth is that many companies fail because they focus too intensely on their own innovations, and then neglect the innovation ecosystems on which their success depends. In our increasingly interdependent world, winning requires more than just delivering on your own promises. It means ensuring that a host of partners - some visible, some hidden - deliver on their promises, too.

Historia
Nobody wants to fail. But in highly complex organizations, success can happen only when we confront our mistakes, learn from our own version of a black box, and create a climate where it's safe to fail. We all have to endure failure from time to time, whether it's underperforming at a job interview, flunking an exam, or losing a pickup basketball game. But for people working in safety-critical industries, getting it wrong can have deadly consequences.

What an amazing book!
Revisado: 12-24-15
I had no expectation of this book. I don't even know how I came by it. One day I just picked it up and started to read it. At the opening chapter I almost put it down. What a horrible story! But I stuck with it and soon I was unable to put it down. It is likethree books into one. The goodstuff just keeps on coming. So rich with information that it is too much to take in in one go.
Wonderful book! This must have taken the author ages to write.
