Historia
Doctor Jack Troy was born and raised in Faha, but his responsibilities for the sick and his care for the dying mean he has always been set apart from the town. His eldest daughter, Ronnie, has grown up in her father’s shadow, and remains there, having missed one chance at love – and passed up another offer of marriage from an unsuitable man. But in the Advent season of 1962, as the town readies itself for Christmas, Ronnie and Doctor Troy’s lives are turned upside down when a baby is left in their care.

Historia
Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

Captures Real Life, and a modern day Catcher in the Rye
Revisado: 04-05-25
I don’t know how the author was able to catch the voice and thoughts of a teenage boy in Appalachia, but she did and it was absolutely amazing. And to make it even better, she gave this kid, the attitude and temperament of Holden Caulfield from Catcher in the Rye. The fellow that read the book had an amazing voice that captured the accent and attitude of Demon Copperhead like nothing I could imagine. Well done!! This audiobook was one hell of a ride.

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Malcolm Gladwell, author of New York Times best sellers including Talking to Strangers and host of the podcast Revisionist History, uses original interviews, archival footage, and his trademark insight to weave together the stories of a Dutch genius and his homemade computer, a band of brothers in Central Alabama, a British psychopath, and pyromaniacal chemists at Harvard. As listeners hear these stories unfurl, Gladwell examines one of the greatest moral challenges in modern American history.

The inhumanity and soulless approach to war
Revisado: 10-02-24
War as revenge? Yes, and unfortunately, the evil go unpunished win lose or draw. The different theories of bombing and how one side one out of the other. You can read the actual book review and Audible to get the general outline of the book but for me this is what it came down to.

Historia
On the last day of summer, a young college grad moves to Chicago and rents a small apartment on the north side of the city, by the lake. This is the story of the five seasons he lives there. A love letter to Chicago, the Great American City, and a wry account of a young man's coming-of-age during the one summer in White Sox history when they had the best outfield in baseball, Chicago is a novel that will plunge you into a city you will never forget and may well wish to visit for the rest of your days.

Brian Doyle growing up as a writer in Chicago
Revisado: 06-30-24
Brian Doyle was such a great writer. What a loss to not have him anymore.
The book is a story about Chicago and young writer growing up, telling us about all the wonderful characters and sites and sounds of Chicago. He made me love Chicago and the time period, oh how I wish I could’ve lived there with him in that apartment complex.
There is a dog that is really a human, it’s hard to explain, sort of like the talking crow in Doyle‘s book Mink River. (If you haven’t read that book and this sounds weird, my advice is just go with it, don’t worry - listen to the content of what is said by the dog/person?
Also the book is absolutely wonderful to listen too. The reader is perfect, he catches the tone and the accents of all the different people. The total package is great!

The most outstanding audible book ever.
Revisado: 06-13-24
I bought the book to read and was absolutely astounded, amazed, and moved by the authors writing. In the middle of the book, I purchased the audible version to hear the beautiful reading of the book by a native Irishman. It was glorious!
In the simplest terms the book was about a small Irish town and the intriguing people in it. It covers the time period before the advent of electricity. But in the larger sense the book was about life and the connection of people within a community. The comings and goings and the deaths of common people made wonderful special by the authors descriptions and stories about them. I felt I knew the inhabitants of that small Irish town, and I cheered, laughed, and cried out loud in parts of the book as they went through life. This book was a wondrously joyful story of life in a time gone by.
I recommend the book in the strongest manner and would encourage you to also buy the hardback version so you can read “in person” the author’s wonderfully descriptive pros.

It’s a book that made me laugh and cry and seethe with anger at times. The author catches the feel of the Vietnam era and they love of a mother and father, and also the true love of brothers and sisters in a family.

Revisado: 02-04-23
The story takes place after Doyle‘s other book about life on the Pacific Northwest west coast. If you liked the first book, then you should read this one! Once you get into it, you will find it is absolutely wonderful and almost as good as his first. Just get it trust me.

Historia
“The Heron” is the nickname a big-city accountant has attached to himself in his new home near San Diego, where he’s using the alias to avoid a hit man who may be after him. It seems a former client believes that The Heron has skipped town with several million dollars not his own. Don Winslow’s ensuing, entertaining yarn is by turns twisty, dark, and comical as we observe the delicate dance between the pursuer and the pursued.

Revisado: 11-12-22
The story was short and quick and a wonderful surprise. To say more might ruin the ending. Ed Harris was perfect and did a surprising job with spot on inflection where needed to help the story along. Rent it and enjoy a good listen, but it goes fast.

Outdoor Adventure Novel (fishing guide saves day)
Revisado: 11-02-22
I love Peter Heller's first novel "Dog Star". This book isn't in the same league, but it's a good listen if you're doing something else. It won't distract you and doesn't require 110% of your attention. This book follows the same fishing guide protagonist from Heller's erlier book which involved a canoe trip in the wilds of Canada (a little more exciting and suspenseful than this book).
The best tip I can give anyone thinking about purchasing this book is that it's A well-read fun adventure novel, without any critical writing or plot twists; great for an easy listen. But if you really want to read a good book consider Heller's "Dog Star" instead.
