Practical Tips an Ideas
Revisado: 02-24-25
I really enjoyed the exercises in this book so I believe that’s its strength. It’s always great to have more ideas for workings and it’s what I was looking for in a book like this. I liked the fact that it was a level above a beginner witchcraft book (yet super practical). That can get repetitive sometimes a lot of the information just gets recycled, but I found some new and useful gems in this one. There were a couple chapters I wasn’t interested in, the rights of passage one, since I’m mostly a solitary, but I understand why it would be included since the author considers herself Wiccan.

Jack Chanek explores the development of her mythology using nine well-known texts written between the 1800s and the 1970s by famous practitioners and historians. He offers insights on The Golden Bough by Sir James George Frazer, The Book of the Law by Aleister Crowley, The White Goddess by Robert Graves, Witchcraft Today by Gerald Brosseau Gardner, and others.

Helpful Overview of Information
Revisado: 12-28-24
This is a good book for those interested in practicing Wicca and witchcraft. I personally wouldn’t seek out the texts the author references but it’s great to have a summary of them. He provides an explanation of why they’re important to the development of Wicca, witchcraft, Paganism, and goddess worship. That’s useful if you’re planning on working with deities in your practice. It gave me a greater understanding of the goddess figure, you don’t always get that in your standard beginner Wicca or witchcraft books. I found the rituals to not be the most accessible for beginners, but they were still interesting to read about.

Inspiring and full of information
Revisado: 12-18-24
There is a lot of useful information in this book. I will probably find myself re-reading at least once. It deals with a large variety of subjects unlike most books which focus on a certain topic. I find it gets straight to the how-to or practical aspects and includes many exercises. There were definitely some advanced topics that were new to me and I don’t fully understand yet. It really does push you to become a better, more advanced practitioner. I found it very inspiring, sensitive, and feel-good as well. It helped me see things in a different light that maybe I was missing before.

Not What I was Looking for
Revisado: 10-13-24
No offense, but if I wanted to read a book about psychology I would read a book about psychology. I was looking for a more straightforward interpretation of the cards and not a rehash of DBT. I wouldn’t recommend this to a beginner of tarot like myself. As the first book on tarot that I picked up, it almost scared me away. It’s too abstract and “deep” for someone just trying to understand the meaning of the cards. To be fair, I haven’t finished it yet and I plan to go back to it once I’m a bit more familiar.

Refreshing and essential voice
Revisado: 10-03-24
Being new to Paganism most of the material I have found centers around the Celtic, Roman, Norse, and Greek gods. It was refreshing to see a work that draws from other traditions and sources, but can still be adapted, albeit to an extent, by pagans and Wiccans. I think many Pagans and Wiccans can benefit from reading about Hoodoo and Voodoo because it gives a more well-rounded and inclusive perspective. I love how the author included some Celtic mythology as well, and even some Mexican folk beliefs. It mentioned some of the similarities and differences between these different practices. It’s essential reading because it’s still difficult to find works about witchcraft that feature other pantheons besides Greek and Celtic.

Historia
Almost 40 years since its original publication, Drawing Down the Moon continues to be the only detailed history of the burgeoning but still widely misunderstood Neo-Pagan subculture. Margot Adler attended ritual gatherings and interviewed a diverse, colorful gallery of people across the United States, people who find inspiration in ancient deities, nature, myth, even science fiction. In this revised edition, Adler takes a fascinating and honest look at the religious experiences, beliefs, and lifestyles of modern America's Pagan groups.

Informative but Could be More Inclusive
Revisado: 08-29-24
There were many parts of this book that I found incredibly moving. It was definitely a meaningful read and I enjoyed the proliferation of personal testimonials and anecdotes. I just wish it could’ve been more inclusive. As a BIPOC getting into Wicca, the Craft, and Paganism it was a bit alienating to hear Adler call Neo-Paganism a white movement. It was also disheartening not to hear her denounce racism within Neo-Paganism more fervently or even at all.

A bit skeptical
Revisado: 07-09-24
I originally found this book rather informative but lately I’ve been hearing that it’s not considered accurate within the Wicca and Pagan communities. I don’t know how much of it I’ll be applying to my own practice. Unfortunately, probably not that much. I did enjoy most of the book and I found it motivating and inspiring as someone new to the craft.

Strange and haunting story
Revisado: 05-05-24
Some of the elements of this book are definitely problematic but I understand the fascination with the author and especially this series. The pedophilia, toxic relationships, incest, and domestic violence are a little glossed over at times and it should come with a trigger warning. However, in some ways this book was ahead of its time. It fully grasps how trauma can distort your view the world and have a negative impact on relationships to say the least. The way Cathy gravitates towards toxic men and her awareness of her mother’s role in it show her resilience and staunch determination to not see herself as a victim but as someone in control of her own destiny.

Historia
The year was 1917. As a war raged across the world, young American women flocked to work, painting watches, clocks, and military dials with a special luminous substance made from radium. It was a fun job, lucrative and glamorous - the girls themselves shone brightly in the dark, covered head to toe in the dust from the paint. They were the radium girls. As the years passed, the women began to suffer from mysterious and crippling illnesses.

Incredibly Amazing True Story
Revisado: 04-25-24
Everyone interested in American History should read this book or at least be familiar with the story. It’s an invaluable snippet of time that shouldn’t be forgotten or minimized. The book does an incredible job of taking you through what these women went through and the incredible tenacity and courage of what they achieved. It actually brought me to tears hearing of the women’s ups and downs and how they tried to overcome the forces that oppressed them despite facing certain death. It really is a testament to the human spirit and a great David and Goliath story if there ever was one.
