Historia
Francesca Ekwuyasi’s debut novel tells the interwoven stories of twin sisters, Kehinde and Taiye, and their mother, Kambirinachi. Kambirinachi feels she was born an Ogbanje, a spirit that plagues families with misfortune by dying in childhood to cause its mother misery. She believes that she has made the unnatural choice of staying alive to love her human family and now lives in fear of the consequences of that decision.

Love, grief and understanding
Revisado: 08-02-24
I enjoyed the book. It’s very sensual. For some reason I didn’t expect it but I liked the description.
I did get somewhat confused, with the characters and stories but I enjoyed the book enough to read it again so that I fully grasp it.
The love story between the twins is complex and beautiful. The way mental illness is described is also very intense and beautiful.
Many triggers, SA, homophobia, miscarriage, violence, grief, addiction and more. But again a lot of softness to balance out these very heavy subjects.

Love and friendship
Revisado: 07-25-24
Sad, but sweet book. As expected a good portion of the book is about the friendship and love between Robyn and Whitney. But it is much more. How they cared about each other, how their feelings for each other enabled detrimental patterns.
It also shows us what love looks like at different times of our lives. Robyn’s growth was directly linked to who she is as a person but also how she was impacted by her attachement to her mother. I loved how she spoke of her mom and how her mom loved her and allowed her to find her way.
It also shows us that no matter how much you try and fight, you cannot save anyone but yourself, and even then, it’s extremely difficult.
Beautiful book, vulnerable, soft and insightful.

Whatever you think this book is, you’re wrong
Revisado: 07-16-24
It's a lot.. not for everyone. A lot. I read it without reading anything about it and I was extremely surprised.
Please be mindful of the many many triggers in this book. S/A DV, a lot of slurs used, and frankly the terminology used I would also add that the target audience would be black people. There's a level of cultural understanding that plays into getting into the plot.
It is extremely well written. I had to take breaks a few times because it was too stressful and hectic for to go through it in one go.
The character development of the main characters is impeccable. It's a slow and steady process to see how layered they are, how we can connect to them in different ways.
It's a good book, difficult to read, and not what is expected at all in my opinion.
Please note, this is book 1 of 3.
The performance of the narrator deserves some type of award. Beyond excellent. A’dina you did your thing!

Revisado: 07-16-24
First thing first. The performance of A’dina, the narrator, is excellent. I feel like I was watching a movie. Bravo.
Book review:
I was more prepared for the content since I was newly introduced to this author after book 1,Deep Throat Diva.
This series got better and better. The story line is just wild.
Action, drama, sex, violence, vengeance. There's absolutely everything in this book.
Again, very well written, extremely well described. You feel as if you are seeing what you're reading, like you're in the room. I needed to take breaks but I finished it pretty quickly.
The whole book is unrealistic but very believable. The story line is strong. The characters are layered, deep, complicated, sometimes loving, other times mentally unstable and cruel.

Historia
Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction." She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income. In I’m Glad My Mom Died, Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail.

Don’t be offended by the title
Revisado: 07-10-24
I liked the book, it’s well written, it may seem like it would be a book about how much Jeannette hated her mother but in my opinion it’s quite the opposite. The book is more of a layered love letter to her mother and an open letter to herself. It reminds me of a journal.
Many difficult subjects are discussed, especially around mental illness. Not sure if the author intended to do it but the start to the development of her insecurities are mapped out and it’s a raw insight of what it feels like to be the child of an abuser.
I liked the book very much, although it feels sad to say that I enjoyed a book like this, her real life was not entertaining but more of an invitation to a see and understand her as she opens up and allows herself to be vulnerable and transparent.

Angela’s voice and her compassion
Revisado: 12-15-23
Angela Davis is an amazing force and voice in the fight against oppression. In this book she covers so many different topics and types of oppression then ties it all together. It is beautiful and eye opening. I hope everyone reads it. And if you get the audible version you’ll get to hear it straight from her voice.
Love it.

No surprise that Neil is my favorite
Revisado: 11-27-23
From the beginning I thought this book would be my favorite. And it came very close to it, I do feel like these McClain brother be hollering at their wives too much but I also feel like it’s actually balanced out by the way they love their wives.
It was off putting for me but the way the book is written you can understand how the dynamic makes sense.
Neil and Sage make perfect sense.
Lovely book.

The flow of the book is beautiful
Revisado: 11-25-23
I enjoyed the flow of the book, it is well written and tackled a lot of important subjects. Families can be very complicated and there’s a good dive into the different dynamics we come across in our lives.
I love how all the personalities come together and it makes sense. Even though everyone is quite different. They are all compatible in a believable and loving way.
My only critic was in the beginning when and how Nolan handles the situation with his producer. This protective side came up when Brigitte became a victim but it didn’t seem to matter when there was obviously other victims before her. Although I didn’t love that part I do agree what this is a real reflection of how men deal with these type of situation, their perspective shifts once someone they care about is involved.

The way he loves her is beautiful
Revisado: 11-24-23
Loved it. Armand did get on my nerves and I wish there was a more conclusive ending for him but it didn’t impact the story line.
I loved how the book shows us how difficult it is to break cycles and how love helped her find the confidence she lost when she was younger. Loved how Leland loves her without restriction from the start. Kim needed that unwavering love and care to get herself together.

Excellent, as I expected.
Revisado: 10-19-23
Akala’s writing is impressive. He tackled many important and complex topics, while simultaneously sharing personal experiences and views, all this in a way that was comprehensive and kinda poetic.
The book has a beautiful flow and a lot of depth. I’ve learned a lot and it also peeked my interest to learn more. This is the type of teacher we need in classes.
