Who are we? Or perhaps more accurately, why are we who we are? That depends on whom you ask, but most people will agree that our identity is largely determined by our experiences. This includes personal highlights, such as first love, but also personal crises and dealing with our deepest fears. Basically, what matters most to our personal journey through life is the strategies we use to master such very special challenges in the first place.

In The Open-Air Life, Swedish-American writer Linda McGurk introduces listeners to a wide array of Nordic customs and practices that focus on slowing down and spending more and more of ones’ time outdoors. An outdoorsy cousin of hygge, friluftsliv is what Nordic people do outside all day before they cozy up in front of the fireplace with their wool socks on and a cup of hot cocoa.

I use my dad's account for audible, so it's not Michael reviewing this 😁, it's Aislyn.
I listened to this authors first book and loved it! So when I found another you can imagine how excited I was. This book is truly a breath of fresh air, I think everyone should read or listen to it. I've always known that nature is healing, but found it facing how much it can help to heal (even cancer) and I really like how she includes comments from other people that she had met or know as well, it really shows how her perspective on the living world is supported by so many others in Sweden. I want to move there 💚.
Please give this book and her other (No Such Thing as Bad Weather) a listen!

You live in a world that wasn't designed for you. A world where you're expected to sit still, stay quiet, and focus. Because of the way your brain is wired, you can feel like you’re failing at life. But you are not failing. You are awesome. Award-winning content creators Kim and Penn Holderness are on a mission to reboot how we think about the unfortunately named "attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder." As always, they are doing it by looking in the mirror, because they don't just study ADHD; they live it.

So many AWESOME insights:

I absolutely love this book! I follow Pen and Kim on both their Holderness Family YouTube channels and it was so great listening to a book that has people I'm familiar with narrating. I was very recently diagnosed with ADHD but I listened to this audiobook before that and it was one of the main reasons I decided to see if I met the criteria for ADHD because so many of the things they described sound like me.
I think it's really beneficial that they listed all the good that comes with ADHD as well as the bad and since first discovering this book, I've probably listened to it 10-15 times and I plan on 🎧 to it more.
I highly recommend that you listen to or read this book (Although if you have ADHD you will probably be listening) even if you don't have ADHD because they gives many good tips on supporting people with this disorder as well.
Love the title!

Nature's Healing Properties:
Revisado: 04-01-25
I loved how much the author talked a lot about our connection to nature and how healing it can be. I really loved learning how our living world is a great way to treat mental disorders and even physical illnesses, while healing our grief too. I always believed that it's good for kids to get fresh air but this audiobook really helped to open my eyes on the massive benefit nature has on children, as well as allowing me to feel more confident and comfortable with allowing the kids I care for to go explore nature without me having to be next to them every second.
A part of that really stood out to me was when this author talks about a child that was on ADHD medication in the US, but when him and his family went on a trip to Sweden his mother decided to give him a break from it for a little while and his symptoms were far less severe than the were in the US mainly because of all the outdoor play and the schools way of teaching that works much better with a child's mind.
Over all, I could not recommend this book enough and the authors voice is super relaxing. If you're reading this comment, please give it a try. it's absolutely AMAZING and I want to listen to more just like it!
