Historia
New York Times-best-selling author Ron Powers offers a searching, richly researched narrative of the social history of mental illness in America paired with the deeply personal story of his two sons' battles with schizophrenia. From the centuries of torture of "lunatiks" at Bedlam Asylum to the infamous eugenics era to the follies of the anti-psychiatry movement to the current landscape in which too many families struggle alone to manage afflicted love ones, Powers limns our fears and myths about mental illness and the fractured public policies that have resulted.

I really wanted to like this.
Revisado: 04-04-22
I really wanted to like this book but found it hard to stand it. I couldn't figure out what irked me but realized that the book itself had an identity crisis. It couldn't figure out if it was a book on the history of the treatment of mental illness, or a memoir, or an opinion piece, or an autobiography, or even a musical album review. What it was, was a self-serving creation seemingly designed to explain why the author's sons turned out the way they did. Complete with musical accompaniment of his son's playing guitar.
I powered through trying to figure out what the author's point would finally be. Every so often there would be a tidbit that was interesting or left me wanting more. I think the other thing that irked me was the reader's voice. It brought to mind what Winnie the Pooh's uncle would sound like. Anyway, I really can't recommend this book by Audible. Perhaps it would be more enjoyable in book form.

Historia
S.T., a domesticated crow, is a bird of simple pleasures: hanging out with his owner Big Jim, trading insults with Seattle's wild crows (i.e. "those idiots"), and enjoying the finest food humankind has to offer: Cheetos®. Then Big Jim's eyeball falls out of his head, and S.T. starts to think something isn't quite right. Even the slobbering affection of Big Jim's loyal but dim-witted dog, Dennis, fails to cure Big Jim's debilitating malady. S.T. is left with no choice but to abandon his old life and venture out into a wild and frightening new world with his trusty steed Dennis.

Really enjoyed the story and found myself on the edge of my seat a few times and talking back to the book a few times.

Historia
Growing up, Ramsey Stewart branded my soul in ways time could never heal. At 12, he asked me to be his girlfriend. At 13, he gave me my first kiss. By 16, we’d fallen in love, planned a future together, and had our eyes set on the horizon. Love never fails, right? But for Ramsey, it did. I failed him. The entire world failed him. At 17, Ramsey was convicted of killing the boy who assaulted me. "Move on", he wrote in his first and only letter from prison. There was no such thing as giving up on Ramsey. Love may have been our curse, but he was mine - then, now, and forever.

Great love story with a plot twist. I just finished another book that I enjoyed a little more but still enjoyed tremendously and the reading was fantastic.

Historia
Terminated for inappropriate behavior. I couldn’t believe the letter in my hands. Nine years. Nine damn years I’d worked my butt off for one of the largest companies in America, and I was fired with a form letter when I returned home from a week in Aruba. All because of a video taken when I was on vacation with my friends - a private video made on my private time. Or so I thought.... I cracked open a bottle of wine and wrote my own letter to the gazillionaire CEO telling him what I thought of his company. I didn’t think he’d actually respond.

Loved it!
Revisado: 07-26-20
This book took me through so many changes. It was exciting from the beginning to end. It made me smile, cry, and even bite my lip quite a few times. I kept wanting to know more details, so I could picture more in my head and the story was read. And I didn't want it to end. Other than that, I found it a perfect story.

Historia
Sylvie Snow knows the pressures of expectations: a woman is supposed to work hard, but never be tired; age gracefully, but always be beautiful; fix the family problems, but always be carefree. Sylvie does the grocery shopping, the laundry, the scheduling, the schlepping, and the PTA-ing, while planning her son’s Bar Mitzvah and cheerfully tending her husband, Paul, who’s been lying on the sofa with a broken ankle.

Enjoyed the story, not so much the reading of it.
Revisado: 01-13-20
The story is super interesting and the characters are all endearing. I did not however, enjoy the reading of it, particularly, the voice of Teddy, the teenage son. It definitely took away from the book. I think the author could have gotten away without giving each character an individual voice and/or the publisher could have gotten away with one performer reading all parts. Otherwise good and I would read more books by this author.

Didn't want to stop listening to the story to see how it unfolded. One star off for the way she kept saying "Juaquo says".

Believe the reviews
Revisado: 06-20-18
Narrator was good and so was the book. It just wasn't what I expected. It contains a lot of long, unnecessary? stories, and believe me, I love stories. I guess I was looking for a no nonsense approach to changing bad habits. This is probably a better 'how to" for advertising execs on how to get people hooked on your product. Chock full of research and anecdotes, and 10 hours long, it left me feeling like I should have taken notes. The annex at the end was helpful and summed it up though.
