Historia
England, 1914. The world is at war. Captain Hastings, injured and shaken, is invited to Styles Court to recover. It’s a grand old country house - the family home of his old friend - and a perfect haven. Or so it seems. But in the blistering summer heat, trouble is afoot. Simmering tensions are tearing the family apart, and it all comes to a head in the most horrifying way.

Historia
In his wickedly brilliant first novel, Debut Dagger Award winner Alan Bradley introduces one of the most singular and engaging heroines in recent fiction: Eleven-year-old Flavia de Luce, an aspiring chemist with a passion for poison. It is the summer of 1950 - and a series of inexplicable events has struck Buckshaw, the decaying English mansion that Flavia’s family calls home. A dead bird is found on the doorstep, a postage stamp bizarrely pinned to its beak. Hours later, Flavia finds a man lying in the cucumber patch and watches him as he takes his dying breath.

A Nice Little Romp
Revisado: 11-08-24
I mostly enjoyed it but I have to be honest; the main character worked my nerves. I’m not sure if it’s how she was written or how the narrator portrayed her, but although I’m fully aware that childlike scrappiness was essential to get across to the audience, I found myself taking frequent breaks to escape from her. I believe this will be my first and only Flavia de Luce book. Still an enjoyable plot though.

I’ve always liked this story and the movie too. The narrator does a wonderful Maine accent that really puts you in the story. Great job.

Historia
November, 1923. Olive’s school chum, Gigi, invites Olive to London because Gigi’s dotty grandmother fears for her life—or so she’s said to Gigi. However Olive is surprised to find that the dowager is far from muddled. The sharp and imperious matriarch refuses to admit to her worries and sends Olive on her way. Without a client or case, Olive is swept into the glittering lifestyle of the “fast set,” and their decadent excess. But then among the cocktails and champagne, a murderer strikes during a frivolous party game, and Olive realizes the dowager’s fears were well-founded.

Really Liking This Series!

As an Agatha Christie aficionado, I’m really enjoying following Olive’s adventures. I didn’t start the series from the beginning, but you’ll have no problem following along no matter which book you start with. Can’t wait to download the next one!
