Great for the whole family!
Revisado: 08-22-19
The story and the narrator kept all of us (ages 4, 8, 10, and adult) totally enthralled. So many wonderful themes of adaptation, community and connection, and sacrifice told in an engaging way. Can't wait to listen to the sequel!

Pretend Chewing In an Audiobook Should Be Illegal
Revisado: 05-24-19
My kids enjoyed it, I was less enthusiastic. The voices and characters were not very engaging, and I almost had to stop listening in the parts with someone speaking while pretending to loudly chew, so awful.

Historia
Drawing on dozens of intimate audio interviews with families from all across the country, award-winning psychologist and writer Andrew Solomon redefines what it means to be an “ideal family” in America today. Solomon observes that America, led in large part by the women’s, civil rights, and gay rights movements, has undergone a radical social shift in the last few decades. Although the structure of family has changed, economic and legal structures lag behind and need to adapt to accommodate this explosive new reality.

Great listen for any human living among others!
Revisado: 01-09-19
The interview style format enriched the subject matter so much, and the author/interviewer treated his subject matter and his subjects with empathy and heart. It was a sensitive and fascinating exploration of the different types of family groups that exist in contemporary society, both the strength and the challenges. I suggest this for anyone who interacts with families, and especially children. Teachers, social workers, coaches- we can all benefit from having greater insight and understanding of people's lives that may look different from our own, and explore our biases which sometimes come through in our interactions with others.

Amazing story, well told by the author
Revisado: 12-02-18
I would have loved for this book to be twice as long. The narrative threads that Obama weaves together about her life are engaging and emotional, and offer perspective and insight on events that I hadn't previously known. I couldn't imagine anyone else but the author herself reading this book for the audiobook, and I'm so glad she did.

I enjoyed both the substance of this book as well as the reading of it. Definitely the type of work that requires the author herself to read it, Luvvie's voice and perspective are essential to these times we live in.

Historia
Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed. Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil’s name.
