Historia
Although beautiful young widow Phoebe, Lady Clare, has never met West Ravenel, she knows one thing for certain: He’s a mean, rotten bully. Back in boarding school, he made her late husband’s life a misery, and she’ll never forgive him for it. But when Phoebe attends a family wedding, she encounters a dashing and impossibly charming stranger who sends a fire-and-ice jolt of attraction through her. And then he introduces himself...as none other than West Ravenel.

Engaging Characters, Excellent Narration
Revisado: 03-30-25
Another great book in a series where interesting characters with different quirks and personalities, reappear in a beautifully imagined storyline. Weston quickly became my favorite character in Book one and I was eagerly awaiting his love story. He doesn’t disappoint.
Brilliantly narrated with such an array of voices that you immediately know who is speaking without the need for them to be named.

Historia
Life is not easy for the poor relations of England’s upper crust, but fate and clever schemes bring them together. Lady Fortescue and Colonel Sandhurst hatch a plan: What if they were to transform her decrepit Bond Street home into a posh hotel, offering their guests the pleasure of being waited upon by nobility? With the help of other down-and-out aristocrats, they do just that, and London’s newest hotel, The Poor Relation, is born. The establishment is an immediate hit with London’s most illustrious citizens, save the Duke of Rowcester....

Historia
Beatrix Hathaway would much rather spend time with her collection of rescued animals than flirting in a stuffy ballroom. If her unconventional behavior earns the mockery of handsome rakes like Captain Christopher Phelan, so be it. She’d rather stay true to herself, even if it means never finding love. Christopher’s courtship of Beatrix’s friend, the vivacious but flighty Prudence Mercer, is interrupted when his regiment is sent to fight in the Crimea. After a particularly devastating battle, he writes a letter to Prudence.

Historia
Just when everything at the Poor Relation Hotel seems to be running smoothly, Sir Philip brings in another poor relation, Mrs. Budge. When Sir Philip presents his paramour, Lady Fortescue swears great oaths and says the woman is probably related to half the costermongers in London and certainly does not possess one rich relative. Mrs. Budge does nothing but eat all day and refused to do any work around the hotel. Worst of all, Miss Tonks seems to be taking the romance between Sir Philip and Mrs. Budge quite hard.

I am going to die, Polly thought. The crowd clamored for a speech. Polly raised her hands, and they fell silent. From the foot of the gallows, she asked the spectators why she, a poor woman, should hang for theft, while the abbess of Covent Garden can commit murder on the souls of innocent country girls over and over again and yet go free - and then she condemned them to hell.

Depressing and Dark
Revisado: 01-01-24
Narrator made so many errors in pronunciation that it became unbearable and embarrassing. Storyline was dark and unpleasant which is realistic but I don’t listen to MCB’s books for a grim history lesson. I want light, entertainment. This was not fun or particularly entertaining. .

Historia
She had dared turn a cold shoulder to London's prize catch. She was a precocious American upstart who thought beauty, brains, and bravery were enough to conquer London society. Well, he'd show her! Nobody spurned Lord David Manley, the most eligible bachelor in town - not publicly, not privately. He was determined that she'd soon be trembling in his arms, desperately in love with the man she had dared mock. David Manley always got his way, and Miss Molly Maguire presented a challenge he couldn't resist.

NOT an ENGLISH romance!
Revisado: 11-20-23
I couldn’t even listen to this all the way through. I generally enjoy
these books because I love listening to the charming English accents and losing myself in a charming bygone era. The ghastly, crass East Coast American accent is jarring and unpleasant and the American characters are just as crass and ugly. The narrator does a great job with the accents but it’s NOT an accent I want to listen to!

And how better to begin making herself a local leading light than by entering the village quiche-making competition? Unburdened by old-fashioned ideas of fair play, the ruthless Agatha decides to ensure she wins by buying her entry from a London delicatessen.

Is Agatha ever going to settle down?
Revisado: 05-31-23
I keep hoping poor Agatha will finally find love. I’m beginning to grow weary of her disastrous liaisons and keep thinking she has to grow and develop as a person at some point. I’m feeling as though the characters are stagnating but I still enjoy their misadventures.

Toni and Agatha are in the car on the way to Officer Bill Wong’s long-awaited wedding when, much to their shock, a naked young man bursts through a hedge on the side of the road and comes running toward them. Terrified, he explains that he has just seen a dead body in the woods. Toni lends him an old t-shirt to cover himself, Agatha calls the police, and the young man takes them to the spot where he saw the body, across from a meadow where the Mircester Naturist Club is due to have its annual summer barbecue.

Beautifully read and interpreted by the brilliant Penelope Keith. Throughout the series hers has been, by far, the most engaging performer. She brings each character to life and her diction is perfect.

The idyllic Cotswolds village of Thirk Magna is best known for the medieval church of St. Ethelred and its bells, which are the pride and glory of the whole community. As the bell-ringers get ready for the visit of the dashing Bishop Peter Salver-Hinkley, the whole village is thrown into a frenzy. Meanwhile, Agatha convinces one of the bell-ringers, the charming lawyer Julian Brody, to hire her to investigate the mystery of the Bishop's ex-fiancee: a local heiress, Jennifer Toynby, who went missing years ago and whose body was never found.
