I almost skipped this. I usually skip half editions. Glad I didn’t. Fun to hear a well done full production. I’m only sad that Nagatha will not always be Kate Mulgrew. That’s going to be the hardest R.C. Bray voice to go back to.

A down-to-earth global pop star. A deeply spiritual, cerebral powerhouse. A famously outspoken introvert. For her millions of fans, and the few unacquainted, defining rock luminary Alanis Morissette is an exercise in dichotomies and nuance. And though her most formidable traits are seemingly at odds with one another, they are, oddly enough, completely emblematic of all of us: complex, conflicting, and, most importantly, ever evolving. With her striking command of language and profound emotional fluency, the 46-year-old covers an enormous amount of personal ground with listeners.

It's not juicy gossip. It felt like a comfortable talk with someone I didn't know, but I've heard of. Maybe it's sincere, or maybe it's engineered. It's a pleasant hour and a half, whatever it is. If Jagged LIttle Pill was part of your youth, then you will probably like this. Thank you, Alanis. Thank you, Audible. Thank you, life with some contentment.

Maria Bamford is a creative genius. But the process of creating is not something that “comes easily” or “is enjoyable” for her. So, over the years, she’s invented a number of helpful techniques for tricking, shaming, coercing herself into doing things. You Are (A Comedy) Special is 15-step comedic send up of a self help guide that examines Maria’s approach to stand-up in a hilarious fashion.

I don't really care for how-to books, and I really dislike motivational books, so I just fail to understand how stars work, right?
No, this isn't a really a how-to book, and it's not particularly motivational. It's also not really satire. What is it, then? I don't know. You listen to it, and tell me. It had funny voices. It had random jumps between stories. It had embarrassing anecdotes (with some REAL names). It had Maria Bamford, basically. If you like Maria Bamford's kind of comedy, odds are good you'll like this. If you don't know Maria Bamford's comedy, then 2 hours is probably a heavy dose to start with, but go for it! I'm sure it will be fine.

You don't really have to read these in any particular order. It's cotton candy fiction. Like cotton candy, though, if you you're not methodical and work your way from one end to other, it's going to get messy. Hmm, can I extend this metaphor any further. Ok, sometimes when you let cotton candy sit out too long, it gets all gunky, kinda like eye boogers. You know what I mean? Well, you should probably read these quickly if you don't want to lose the narrative, or have to look up the cultural references anyway. Also, stay hydrated. It's not really important for the book, but good advice, generally.

There are many books that inspire careful scrutiny of plot and world building. There are other books that are simply fun, and allow you to skip figuring out how many hours a laden dragon can fly, what kind of ecology would be necessary to support a large land predator, or how the heck time travel would work if you killed your own grandmother. This book, and the series, as a whole, are of the latter variety. That's not to say it's not carefully crafted, and no doubt, studiously researched. It's just that this is a fun read, you can pop in and out of, fearlessly. Gary is a fun hero, sorry villain, and hearing his adventures battling various heroes, villains, and the incalculable varieties existing in between these labels, is a blast. Get it. Read it. Enjoy it.

Historia
Minalan gave up a promising career as a professional warmage to live the quiet life of a village spellmonger in the remote mountain valley of Boval. It was a peaceful, beautiful little fief, far from the dangerous feudal petty squabbles of the Five Duchies, on the world of Callidore. There were cows. Lots of cows. And cheese. For six months things went well: He found a quaint little shop, he befriended the local lord, the village folk loved him, he found a sharp young apprentice to help out, and, best yet, he met a comely young widow with the prettiest eyes.

Well written. Female characters are disappointing
Revisado: 08-06-18
This is a solid fantasy series. With such a recent release, though, I expected a more positive treatment of the female characters. They consistently offer sex to the hero in appreciation for his rescue. It's an established trope, but it's out of place in fiction being released now. It won't stop me from continuing to listen to the series, and I don't presume to tell any author how to write their books. I think the best advice I can give is to use judgement and some parental guidance if you're sharing this book with kids. That said, there's plenty of violent imagery, too. I think I expect that, though.

I demoted the story to 4 stars only because they made a vital character (SL) temporarily stupid to move the plot along. Once I got over that 3 sentence disappointment, it went back to being epically enjoyable. Can’t wait for book 3.

Revisado: 05-01-17
Yeah, rollicking is an odd word, but I'm thinking maybe it will catch on as a nickname for the author. Anyway, you should read this series. If you have read the rest you know this. Why are you reading reviews? If you haven't, start with Tome of Bill and work you're way up, or little will make sense.

Historia
The Dalai Lama, at his most compassionate and outspoken, here elaborates and deepens his vision for the nonreligious way. Transcending the mere "religion wars", he outlines a system of secular ethics that gives tolerant respect to religion, those that ground ethics in a belief in God and an afterlife, and those that understand good actions as leading to better states of existence in future lives. And yet, with the highest level of spiritual and intellectual authority, the Dalai Lama makes a claim for what he calls a third way.

A calm examination of ethics in a secular world.
Revisado: 01-02-12
Would you consider the audio edition of Beyond Religion to be better than the print version?
This is not a meditation book, but the calm cadence of Martin Sheen makes it a very soothing listen. You can tell he is attempting to evoke the peaceful speech of the author. I believe this does contribute something beyond the print version of the book.
What other book might you compare Beyond Religion to and why?
I would compare this book to secular and atheist titles, by authors like Richard Dawkins, that examine philosophy and spirituality, on similar terms, absent the constraints of religion. The book does not attack religious morality, rather it attempts to bridge it to secular humanist ideas about inherent self-worth and dignity of all people. It also provides a counter-argument to some of the writing of Nietzsche.
Have you listened to any of Martin Sheen’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
First time listener of Martin Sheen narration.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The sincerity and intellectual honesty of the writing impressed me. D'alai Lama writes from deep conviction and continual concern for fellow human beings.
