Historia
In 1972, when workers in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, were digging the foundations for a new development, the last thing they expected to find was a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, the dilapidated neighborhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side and shared ambitions and sorrows. Chicken Hill was where Moshe and Chona Ludlow lived when Moshe integrated his theater and where Chona ran the Heaven & Earth Grocery Store.

A story of the Power of Love
Revisado: 09-15-23
I had no idea what this book was about and it must have been the title that grabbed me. I fell in love with the characters and the ethnic strength that has made us human and compassionate. James McBride is a powerful writer and will be one of the great ones of our time. Bravo for the wonderful characters that he created and gave life to. This will be a book I recommend to my reader friends who enjoy a story well told.

Historia
Tom Lowe’s identity and his pride are invested in the work he does with his back and his hands. He designed and built his family’s dream home, working extra hours to pay off the adjustable rate mortgage he took on the property, convinced he is making every sacrifice for the happiness of his wife and son. Until, in a moment of fatigued inattention, shingling a roof in too-bright sunlight, he falls. In constant pain, addicted to painkillers at the cost of his relationships with his wife and son, Tom slowly comes to realize that he can never work again.

Wonderful reading and story that is created in cold winter scenes in low income housing . The characters reach into us and teach us humility and compassion. Loved it all .

I enjoyed this book despite feeling discomfort at times and thinking that this is the way the world works. Loved the character Ruth that was just a wonderful hero of being a good person that was honest and dependable. Very powerful !

Historia
Charlie Reade looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, a decent student. But he carries a heavy load. His mom was killed in a horrific accident when he was seven, and grief drove his dad to drink. Charlie learned how to take care of himself—and his dad. When Charlie is seventeen, he meets a dog named Radar and her aging master, Howard Bowditch, a recluse in a big house at the top of a big hill, with a locked shed in the backyard. Great writing by a master. Really fun read that kept the reader guessing to the next chapter. I don't read science fiction but this gave me a craving for more. It was a very good story line and I would highly recommend it to fans of Stephen King and others like myself !

Historia
Ordered to hold an abandoned army post, John Dunbar found himself alone, beyond the edge of civilization. Thievery and survival soon forced him into the Indian camp, where he began a dangerous adventure that changed his life forever. Set in 1863, the novel follows Lieutenant John Dunbar on a magical journey from the ravages of the Civil War to the far reaches of the imperiled American frontier, a frontier he naively wants to see "before it is gone".

This story is timeless !
Revisado: 08-23-22
I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this. I cringe when thinking about the memories of the movie. Granted that was when I was much younger and didn't see past the glamor. When you listen to this book and read in details about what was going on at that time, it's very deep and moving. As much as the story has cliches , they are necessary to make the overall points. The book covers a lot in a short time. Give yourself time to absorb the story in bits and pieces and feel the richness.
The reader, George Guidall is the best. I love listening to him as well.

Very good historical fiction showing the hard life of settling in early Florida. The family and workers were knit tightly together weathering hard ships and loss. I would recommend this if you like historical fiction and seeing the hardships that came before the modern life.

This is what I call a GREAT book !
Revisado: 03-28-22
This book was read to perfection by George Guidall and the story line was riveting. I enjoyed so many aspects of it and have recommended it to many of my fellow readers. It had imagery and the story line made me so sad at times realizing what a tough life they had settling on cattle ranches. The description of the horses also elicited emotion while reading it and it fascinated me.
Bravo and I hope others enjoy this as I did.

A new fan of Western Novels
Revisado: 03-24-22
I am a newbie on listening to Westerns. What I have been missing !!! George Guidall (the reader) does Wonderfull justice to this book and brings characters to life . I loved listening to his voice as much as the novel . Its a beautiful unfolding of how the buffalo were hunted down and replaced with cattle. I never thought of that time capsule but now I understand with the bittersweet progress that built the west. The buffalo and the Indians lost their way of life as white men came along and its a painful read at times but the rewards of this novel are great. I am on to my next Elmer Kelton novel.

Revisado: 03-20-22
This was a great pick for a first time listener to a western. I loved this story from the start and had a hard time putting it down.
It was a great story line that included history, cultural issues and romance. The story line was satisfying throughout the book.

A great book while traveling
Revisado: 03-20-22
My husband and I listened to this book on a long drive and found it entertaining. The story has a simple plot that was engaging. I am always thinking of what it must be like to live somewhere else and this book transported us to exactly that scenario. The writer is an excellent writer that also tells a good story. He and his family uprooted their urban home to a location that was a complete opposite from where they were coming. The writer covered it all on making such a move with his family that was serious and humorous at times.
For some reason this book went well with our driving on highways and going through small towns thinking of what it would be like to live there. We both enjoyed it and especially the great writing !
