Historia
More Strange Scotland is a collection of anecdotes, facts, folklore, and legends about the strangeness of that little nation on the western fringe of Europe. From fairies to witches and the frightening water horses, Scotland has a host of legends. Add haunted castles, strange pub names, and devilish people to the mix, sprinkle with Aberlour spirits and the mists of Skye and then start listening to the audiobook. If ghostly bagpipers and unseen river monsters don’t scare you off, then you may revel in the stories from this most strange of all countries.

Not My Cup of Tea
Revisado: 05-24-21
The titular pun aside, when I saw "strange" I guess I was expecting something else. This is a book about fairies, fables and legends not authentic Scottish history. If you like Scottish lore and tales this is the book for you. If you're looking for Scottish history of an unusual variety you're going to have to look somewhere else.

Historia
The rich history of Pulp stories are pure Americana. Written like a script from Film Noir movie, you are to be transported to a time in the 30's, 40's or 50's, where the liquor flowed freely and there was always a Crosley radio playing in some room off in the distance. Pulp Noir is more about a small slice or life...and usually a dark one.... Pour yourself a nice warm drink, dim the lights...conjure up in your consciousness; Femme Fatales, handguns, seedy bars, bad luck, thieves, scoundrels, a pack of Pall Mall's, low lighting, and definitely everything in glorious black and white.

This is one of those books where you wish there was more; more to each story or maybe an entire book based on those of the plotlines presented here. The stories are great on their own and they leave you wanting more. And Bill Nevitt is, as always, a professional performer.
Great book!

Americans are losing touch with reality. On virtually every issue, from climate change to immigration, tens of millions of Americans have opinions and beliefs wildly at odds with fact, rendering them unable to think sensibly about politics. In How America Lost Its Mind, Thomas E. Patterson explains the rise of a world of “alternative facts” and the slow motion cultural and political calamity unfolding around us.

Better That the Average Presidential Book
Revisado: 01-03-20
This will be short: I enjoyed the book for one reason and one reason only: it was topical not chronological and that made all the difference to me. Instead of the same old rundown of President after President, year after year, Schmuhl address topics, media, for example, and examines each Presidents dealings with and opinions of the media.
A refreshing approach.

Historia
John A. Jakle and Keith A. Sculle, two leading experts on the nation’s roadside landscape, examine the crucial role that small- to mid-sized city hotels played in American life during the early decades of the 20th century, a time when the automobile was fast becoming the primary mode of transportation. Before the advent of the interstate system, such hotels served as commercial and social anchors of developing towns across the country. America’s Main Street Hotels provides a thorough survey of the impact these hotels had on their communities and cultures.

On the Fence
Revisado: 12-20-19
I wanted to like this book. I'm fascinated by this period in history so the content seemed intriguing to me. It was mostly disappointing. Instead of concentrating on a single hotel or perhaps hotels in a particular city or region, the authors jumped from hotel to hotel faster than a car skidding on ice. There also was a lack of flair; it was a very academic sounding work. The facts were interesting but they come at you faster than oncoming traffic and you didn't have much time before you were whisked off to another hotel in another town miles and miles away.
The narrator had a folksy quality which fit in well with the time period but the narration, too, was off target with its numerous mispronunciations. I found myself saying "Bothwell!" and "Sedalia!" out loud hoping for relief.
I am sorry I didn't fully enjoy this book.

A Good Book Ruined
Revisado: 11-01-19
It has long been my contention that a poor book can be made greater by a talented narrator and at the same time a great book can be ruined by poor narration. When it comes to "Women of Scotland" the latter is true. This is the great story of the mostly unknown or lesser known women in Scottish history. Great tales abound yet they get lost in a amateurish narration.
I'm not sure what accent this narrator thought they were doing but I do know two things for certain: 1) It's fake; and 2) It sure isn't Scottish. Why the narrator chose not to use their own voice/accent (assuming American) is beyond me but that choice made this audiobook a total disaster.
In addition to the bad narration, the audio quality was bad and the entire production was pock-marked by poor and obvious edits. A wonderful tale ruined by an amateur narration and production. I think I'll try to find this book in print and imagine my Scottish grandmother is reading it to me.

In For the Common Good, Charles Dorn challenges the rhetoric of America’s so-called crisis in higher education by investigating two centuries of college and university history. From the community college to the elite research university - in states from California to Maine - Dorn engages a fundamental question confronted by higher education institutions ever since the nation’s founding: Do colleges and universities contribute to the common good?

This is a great academic look at the history of colleges and universities in America. Being an academic work it isn't for the casual reader. But if you want to truly understand why American higher education is at a crossroads, this is the book for you.

Setting a Different Course
Revisado: 09-08-19
How many books have been written about the Titanic. Hundreds? Thousands, maybe? Finally, we have one with a different twist. The last night on the Titanic gives us the usual little tidbits about the ship, its passengers, and its demise but it also delves into the food, drink and ambiance of the doomed liner. Recipes for cocktails of the time and their backstory are scattered throughout the book like wine bottle in the debris field itself.
If only for its unique approach, this is worth a listen.

Historia
At the turn of the 20th century, many affluent Brooklyn teens and young adults were bucking the constraints of their immigrant parents and behaving badly: drinking, having sex, staying out all night, stealing, scamming local businesses, and engaging in other more serious activities. When 20-year-old Walter Brooks was murdered in a seedy Manhattan hotel in 1902, the ensuing court case was front-page news throughout the country.
