Meet the Cooke family: Mother and Dad, brother Lowell, sister Fern, and Rosemary, who begins her story in the middle. She has her reasons. “I was raised with a chimpanzee”, she explains. “I tell you Fern was a chimp and already you aren’t thinking of her as my sister. But until Fern’s expulsion...she was my twin, my funhouse mirror, my whirlwind other half and I loved her as a sister”. As a child, Rosemary never stopped talking. Then, something happened, and Rosemary wrapped herself in silence.

Wonderful book on many levels, but far too much inner dialogue, and at least for me took away from the story
Revisado: 05-20-23
I think my title kind of sunsets how I feel about the book. It’s a great storyline and I like the back-and-forth between starting at the start the middle start the ending start the beginning middle the end middle the end of the end whatever… I felt that’s it a lot about humanity, and then it kind of gets muddled in the personalized feelings of the main character. Overall, I found the book to be depressing.

Historia
Stephen Kuusisto was born legally blind - but he was also raised in the 1950s and taught to deny his blindness in order to "pass" as sighted. Stephen attended public school, rode a bike, and read books pressed right up against his nose. As an adult, he coped with his limited vision by becoming a professor in a small college town, memorizing routes for all of the places he needed to be. Then, at the age of 38, he was laid off. With no other job opportunities in his vicinity, he would have to travel to find work.

Great story that captures your heart
Revisado: 03-24-22
This story helped me to better understand the life of those who are visually impaired and utilize guide dogs to help them with mobility and with life. I love the relationship between the man and the dog, the author and his beautiful dog and was somewhat sad at the end but that’s life. Nothing like dogs.

Historia
Cold Storage, Alaska, is a remote fishing outpost where salmonberries sparkle in the morning frost and where you just might catch a King Salmon if you're Zen enough to wait for it. Settled in 1935 by Norse fishermen who liked to skinny dip in its natural hot springs, the town enjoyed prosperity in the mid-20th century, at the height of the frozen fish boom. But now the cold storage plant is all but abandoned and the population is shrinking every day.

Super entertaining book. I really enjoyed it and the characters were extremely lifelike and eccentric at the same time.

Historia
This celebrated classic gives a soldier's-eye-view of the Guadalcanal battles; crucial to World War II, the war that continues to fascinate us all. Unlike some of those on Guadalcanal in the fall of 1942, Richard Tregaskis volunteered to be there. One of only two on-location news correspondents, he lived alongside the soldiers: sleeping on the ground - only to be awoken by air raids - eating meager rations, and braving some of the most dangerous battlefields of World War II.

Powerful and moving
Revisado: 12-03-20
The entire book was well written and performed exquisitely. The story is important to American history and human history. It clearly defines the horrors of war, yet at the same time explains why in certain circumstances one must go to war. As much as I personally wish this was not true, It is. Tregaskis makes us clearly understand this.

Historia
When Chris McDougall agreed to take in a donkey from an animal hoarder, he thought it would be no harder than the rest of the adjustments he and his family had made after moving from Philadelphia to the heart of Pennsylvania Amish country. But when he arrived, Sherman was in such bad shape he could barely move, and his hair was coming out in clumps. Chris decided to undertake a radical rehabilitation program designed not only to heal Sherman's body but to heal his mind as well - and so Chris decided to teach Sherman how to run.

Great idea but...
Revisado: 12-13-19
I think the premise of the book was fantastic. It’s a true story it’s a real story it’s fantastic story but they were too many other elements that were brought into it. Even McDougall at the end of the book it admitted this because he wanted to cover everything and include everyone. I think in many cases that some of the characters that needed to be developed more we’re not. I’m sure Many don’t agree with my assessment of this, and that’s OK, but I was left with a feeling at the end of the book of not really knowing who some of these characters were and felt that by spreading himself so thin A lot of the message and the potential depth of the book was lost.

Historia
Four men, one calling: to serve and protect. As law enforcement officers, Adam Mitchell, Nathan Hayes, and their partners willingly stand up to the worst the world can offer. Yet at the end of the day, they face a challenge that none of them are truly prepared to tackle: fatherhood. While they consistently give their best on the job, good enough seems to be all they can muster as dads. But they’re quickly discovering that their standard is missing the mark. They know that God desires to turn the hearts of fathers to their children, but their children are beginning to drift....

Not quite what I thought...
Revisado: 08-30-12
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
Are you born again? If so, and you are a Christian, than this is a great book for you. However, if you are one of the many other religions in this world, you should be aware that the message here is that if you believe in Christ, then you will be saved and not damned to eternity in hell and if you do not believe/follow Christ then you had better understand that your afterlife is going to be extremely hot.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
Bit trite. Nothing exceptional in the story line and overall a very low level book in many regards.
Which scene was your favorite?
The men working on the house together.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
No
Any additional comments?
The message is very important, fathers are integral in a young man's life. All religions need to strive to keep the family together and it is essential to spend quality time with your boys (and your girls). As an educator, I see so many broken kids from broken families. The correlation is obvious and the message is clear. However, again, I was surprised that the focus of this book far too often was based on one's relationship with Christ. Had I been aware of this in the synopsis I would not have bought this for as a Jew I don't subscribe to this way of thinking.
I am also amazed that a book that purports to be so invested in family values and the quality of life here on earth, supports dietary habits that are so harmful for those who constantly seemed to indulge poor eating throughout the book. These good old Christian boys surely have no concern for the animals they eat and I was offended with the mixing of meat and diary as well.

Historia
On the 78th floor of the World Trade Center’s north tower, no alarms sounded, and no one knew what had just happened at 8:46 a.m. that morning, September 11, 2001. Blind since birth, Michael couldn’t see a thing, but he could hear the sounds of shattering glass, falling debris, and terrified people flooding around him and his guide dog, Roselle. However, Roselle sat calmly beside him. In that moment, Michael chose to trust Roselle’s judgment and not to panic. They were a team....

Thundering Along
Revisado: 12-07-11
What made the experience of listening to Thunder Dog the most enjoyable?
The story was amazing and the reader helped to bring it to life.
What did you like best about this story?
It's real! I also like the extended section in which you were able to listen Michael's actual lectures. This was, to me, a wonderful bonus and truly helped to bring this to life.
Which scene was your favorite?
There are several. I feel that his experience as the building crumbled behind him and his dog, who was so afraid of thunder, held her own and found a safe passage.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
Believe in your inner voice and love not only people, but the wonderful animals that have been put on this earth as well.
Any additional comments?
Michael is an important spokesperson for those with blindness. He taught me so much about what it is to be blind. Thanks Mike!
