And nice to have two whole volumes to binge on. Be warned - you could get hooked on this series! I'd read these in Kindle earlier but the audio version is a fresh experience. Good characters, original universe, and fine narration.

Whether read or listened to, these delightfully original stories are highly entertaining on so many levels, from light entertainment to wise satire. As the series unfolds, the world building never stops. This is some of the best science fiction I've ever read, and the funniest too.

Beyond Austen fanfic, this is one of the best Regencies I've ever read. It's delightful and frequently hilariously satirical. Fans of this type of "romance" set in this period, or of comedies of manners in general, can appreciate the quality here. And the performance is first rate.

Part Canterbury Tales, part Wizard of Oz, part classic "random people stranded together in an inn by a storm" tale, and part diversity fable with a galactic twist, this is a wonderfully imagined and satisfying novel. Concerning others' complaints about the narrator, I was put off by her odd delivery at first at too and almost returned it, but I'm glad I stuck with it (I like this series that well) because either she got way better or I understood her approach to presenting the wildly different characters better, but either way, before long I was appreciating the narrator very much and only take a star off because of my feeling at he beginning.

The best motley crew in space to spend time with in one of the most richly imagined futures. Very well narrated, too.

This news digest has quickly become a habit. On my device it's easy to list the "chapters" (news stories) and if I'm not interested in one (have already read enough about that, or just don't want to hear it) I can just click on the next, and so on. Compared to the New York Times digest, which I also check in on daily (and it has its own virtues), the Post offers fewer stories, but with some of those, provides a longer version with more enlightening background, which I very much appreciate at times. Real journalism can be found here. My only complaint is that Audible has made the decision to have the stories read in a storybook fashion, rather than standard news delivery style. I don't need to be "told" how to hear or feel about the facts in the story. Also, Kamala Harris is mispronounced day after day - no excuse for this! Place names, and not just foreign ones (example: Oregon) are often mispronounced too. But all in all, this is a very good way to get a little more background on headlines seen elsewhere and I do appreciate that this is included with my subscription to Audible, since I already pay through the nose for the Internet subscription to the newspaper.

There's nothing that wrong with this book or the enthusiastic reading of it; it's just that it turned out to be the kind of nonfiction book I'd rather dip into at my own pace; this one is filled with facts and moves very fast. I'm learning that for me, baseball audiobooks probably work better as journalistic stories (such as, talking of baseball, the fine "Where Nobody Knows Your Name," about life in the Minor Leagues). I'll continue looking for good baseball books as it's a fascinating subject to me and I have so much to learn, but I'm reluctantly returning this one and will probably buy it in a print format instead. The audiobook might work very well for other listeners, though.

In an anthology of this sort I guess it's to be expected that some writers will please more than others. I resented the story that was just a thinly veiled libertarian polemic, but the rest were pretty good.

This book is largely a collection of out-takes and backgrounders on the new Surebleak world and the adjustment of the Liadens to it - that sort of thing. Or at least the first half is; that's as far as I could go. It would have been enjoyable for me as such, since I love this world and these people, but the reader made it impossible for me. The problem I had was with his reading of the Liaden way of speaking. It is written as rather stilted and overly formal, yes, but the syntax makes the nuanced and layered intelligence of the civilization more accessible. When it is read as ponderous and self-important, the dialog becomes unlistenable and the characters obnoxious. To do it justice, this kind of text needs to be conveyed with a lightness and wit, not a heavy, slow seriousness. After many tries I finally gave up and will probably return this audiobook - and go back to reading it in print, using my own imagination to hear it.
