Historia
During a culture-shocked exchange year in Japan, 15-year-old Lisa Dempster's imagination is ignited by the story of the henro michi, an arduous 1,200-kilometre Buddhist pilgrimage through the mountains of Japan. Perfectly suiting the romantic view of herself as a dusty, travel-worn explorer (well, one day), she promises to return to Japan and walk the henro michi, one way or another, as soon as humanely possible. Fast-forward 13 years, and Lisa's life is vastly different to what she pictured it would be.

Insightful Travel Narrative
Revisado: 04-14-21
A first person account of a young woman's pilgrimage. Very well written, insightful observations about the people she meets along the way, and herself. But, it's not all about herself. The prose is spare and yet precise which has the effect of bringing the reader along for the journey while allowing them to impart their own reactions. I really, really like this book!

Historia
In a rugged corner of West Texas, billionaire wildcatters and roughnecks are fueling an oil boom so big it’s reshaping our climate, our economy, and our geopolitics. This modern-day gold rush has sent both big oil companies and scrappy start-ups scrambling to secure a piece of the action. Texas Monthly’s Christian Wallace follows characters along every rung of the oil field ladder, from the executive cutting billion-dollar deals to the itinerant pipeline worker risking life and limb, and from the traveling exotic dancer following the trail of money to those who worry that our planet is on ...

Awful Narrator and Formulaic Story
Revisado: 08-12-19
Narrator speaks annoyingly slow(had to increase speed to 1.25). His tone goes between bored stiff and pretentious. It took three attempts to finally get through the whole book as the narrator was distractingly awful.

Historia
To all appearances, Dan Chase is a harmless retiree in Vermont with two big mutts and a grown daughter he keeps in touch with by phone. But most 60-year-old widowers don't have multiple driver's licenses, savings stockpiled in banks across the country, and a bugout kit with two Beretta Nanos stashed in the spare bedroom closet. Most have not spent decades on the run.

Highly disappointing
Revisado: 12-02-18
I have read a number of Thomas Perry's books and thought they were great. This on the other hand, is lousy. Trite, sappy, and filled with long stretches of mindless chatter and droll dialogue. The narrator sounds like he is faking a southern accent with a sappy tone too. Save your self the trouble.

good idea for a story, extremely poorly executed.
Revisado: 09-03-18
this book is filled with sappy metaphors, redundancy, and artificial drama. the story could have stood on its own without the author repeatedly pointing out the drama through the repetition of trite phrases. disappointing

Historia
Meet Ove. He's a curmudgeon - the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. People call him "the bitter neighbor from hell". But behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness.

Touching story brilliantly told
Revisado: 08-27-16
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
After the first few chapters, without a doubt.
Any additional comments?
It started slowly because it took a little while to get to "know" Ove. Once that happened, I realized the brilliance of the story teller. Rich, spare language. Not an extraneous word in the book - just like Ove.
