Historia
For thousands of years, the faithful have honed proselytizing strategies and talked people into believing the truth of one holy book or another. Indeed, the faithful often view converting others as an obligation of their faith - and are trained from an early age to spread their unique brand of religion. The result is a world broken in large part by unquestioned faith. As an urgently needed counter to this tried-and-true tradition of religious evangelism, this audiobook offers the first-ever guide not for talking people into faith - but for talking them out of it.

Take it to the Street
Revisado: 09-02-23
The vibe of this book is apparent even from its cover: it looks like the Anarchist’s Cookbook, and I’m sure that’s no mistake. This work isn’t for the faint of heart, for sure, as it encourages one to actively disabuse the faithful of their faulty epistemologies. Whether or not you actually want to get confrontational with people regarding their faith, this work provides you with the tools to do so, much like a martial art. Once you learn it you don’t necessarily need to go on offense, but at least you always have it as a backup option. Great book. Definitely recommend.

Our world has ended five times: It has been broiled, frozen, poison gassed, smothered, and pelted by asteroids. In The Ends of the World, Peter Brannen dives into deep time, exploring Earth's past dead ends, and in the process offers us a glimpse of our possible future. Many scientists now believe that the climate shifts of the 21st century have analogs in these five extinctions.

Stunning, scary and beautiful
Revisado: 08-04-23
A sweeping ride through geological time: The Ends of the World paints a gorgeous picture of the 5 major extinctions. The scale of time is so vast it can be hard to even fathom, but the author takes you on a ride from 500 million years ago to the actual end of our planet with lively, easy to grasp ideas, imagery and language. A fun and sometimes terrifying read. Highly recommended.

Historia
To fully understand these strange and dangerous times, Jared Yates Sexton takes a hard look at our nation’s history: namely, the abuses committed by those in power and the comforting stories that shaped the way the West has viewed itself up to the present. As reactionaries and authoritarians cling to myths about “Western civilization,” The Midnight Kingdom exposes how political power, religious indoctrination, and economic dominance have been repeatedly weaponized to oppress and exploit, sounding an alarm for what lies ahead as the current order frays.

Fear and Loathing
Revisado: 03-31-23
This a sweeping history of religion, power and paranoia and how these forces are intertwined in our culture and politics. Sexton relates the story of his grandmother, a fundamentalist obsessed with the apocalypse, and sends us on a journey back in time to see how this worldview has shaped the American spirit. Some readers might find the book lacking deep analysis or big solutions, which is fair, but I enjoyed the historical tour from this angle. As someone whose own grandmother was a Christian Nationalist and white supremacist, this book helped me understand how she got that way and why. I definitely recommend the book if you like to get freaked out about impending societal collapse. I’m going with a Fear Porn rating of 7/10.

The definitive book on QAnon from the reporter knows them best; Will Sommer explains what it is, how it has gained a mainstream following among Republican lawmakers and ordinary citizens, the threat it poses to democracy, and how we can reach those who have embraced the conspiracy and are disseminating its lies.

Love it!
Revisado: 03-04-23
I love Will’s podcast Fever Dreams, and I’ve been waiting for this book to come out for a while. It did not disappoint. I thought I knew all there was to know about the Q cult, but there are a ton shocking and crazy revelations in these pages that frankly blew my mind. I don’t think I’ve experienced this many deep, frustrated sighs in a long time. Every 10 minutes I let out a “what!! Oh my god! What?” Great read, or in this case listen. Highly recommended. Narrator was fantastic as well.

Historia
In 1929 Stalin launched his policy of agricultural collectivization - in effect a second Russian Revolution - which forced millions of peasants off their land and onto collective farms. The result was a catastrophic famine, the most lethal in European history. At least five million people died between 1931 and 1933 in the USSR. But instead of sending relief, the Soviet state made use of the catastrophe to rid itself of a political problem.

Democracies can die with a coup d'état - or they can die slowly. This happens most deceptively when in piecemeal fashion, with the election of an authoritarian leader, the abuse of governmental power and the complete repression of opposition. All three steps are being taken around the world - not least with the election of Donald Trump - and we must all understand how we can stop them.

This work combines the feel of a text book with the easy listening of well-wrought popular non-fiction piece. It’s as uplifting as it is horrifying. They’ll be teaching this book for a half century. And if we follow its guidance, we might last that long.

Historia
In this audio investigation - unavailable in book form - Lewis narrates his 2018 report from Washington originally published in Bloomberg View. From inside the White House press room - which Lewis describes as having "the cramped, uncared-for feel of a public toilet" - to a balcony overlooking "a sea of white people" in the Trump International Hotel, to Steve Bannon's Capitol Hill townhouse, where he joins the former campaign CEO to watch the State of the Union address, Lewis takes listeners on an unforgettable behind-the-scenes tour.

This is a new format, and I like it. Instead of reading a 5000 word article I can listen to it. Was that worth $3? Yes. Not worth a full credit on audible so just buy it outright.

Historia
In Everything Trump Touches Dies, political campaign strategist and commentator Rick Wilson brings his darkly funny humor and biting analysis to the absurdity of American politics in the age of Trump. Wilson mercilessly exposes the damage Trump has done to the country, to the Republican Party he served for decades, and to the conservative movement that has abandoned its principles for the worst president in American history. No left-winger, Wilson is a lifelong conservative who delivers his withering critique of Trump from the right.

An Amazing Roast
Revisado: 08-18-18
I’ve listened to just about every new book on the Trump nightmare out there, but this is by far my favorite. Others have been a deep dive into the details of the election or Trump’s mob ties, but ETTD is different. It’s a full blown roast from the right. You can call books about the Russian intervention “fake news,” or others by former WH insiders “salacious,” but ETTD is unassailable because it tears into this horror show of an administration directly and viciously, ripping each of its characters limb from limb. I loved every minute of this book and wish it was twice as long.

A grand summary of the hypocrisy and horror of this administration. The narrator is great as well. I’ll forever hear “Trump quotes” in his voice when I read them. A must read (or listen).
