Historia
Alexei Navalny began writing Patriot shortly after his near-fatal poisoning in 2020. It is the full story of his life: his youth, his call to activism, his marriage and family, his commitment to challenging a world super-power determined to silence him, and his total conviction that change cannot be resisted—and will come. Patriot is Navalny’s final letter to the world: a moving account of his last years spent in the most brutal prison on earth; a reminder of why the principles of individual freedom matter so deeply; and a rousing call to continue the work for which he sacrificed his life.

Incredibly powerful and moving. Navalny is a true hero and to hear this account at this time in the US is so chilling.

Historia
The year is 1920: Flying in the face of convention, legendary American adventuress Beryl Helliwell never fails to surprise and shock. The last thing her adoring public would expect is that she craves some peace and quiet. The humdrum hamlet of Walmsley Parva in the English countryside seems just the ticket. And, honestly, until America comes to its senses and repeals Prohibition, Beryl has no intention of returning stateside and subjecting herself to bathtub gin.

I loved everything about this book - the thoughtful questions, the analysis of the Shakespeare roles she played (including parsing some of the lines), the anecdotes about the productions and her various colleagues, and the rapport between Judi Dench and Brendan O’Hea. I will listen to this book again. It’s wonderful!!

Historia
The mob, billionaires, presidents, political maneuvering, and war. This is a tough, plain-spoken, deeply passionate narrative by one of our most important national figures. So many politicians' books read as though they've been cobbled together from old speeches. The Good Fight is as far from that as it is possible to get. It is the story of a man who knows what a good fight is because he has had to fight like hell for everything his whole life.

So many good stories in a well-lived and admirable life
Revisado: 09-08-24
Harry Reid was unique, and his life story is so interesting and his writing so vivid. The narrator struggled with pronunciation of names and oddly, the audiobook is not edited, so various times, you hear him re-read a line or two. It doesn’t really detract but it’s just odd that no one fixed it. Overall a great listen!

In The Art of Power, Pelosi describes for the first time what it takes to make history—not only as the first woman to ascend to the most powerful legislative role in our nation, but to pass laws that would save lives and livelihoods, from the emergency rescue of the economy in 2008 to transforming health care.

Historia
Obituary writer Nadine Barbault doesn’t mind being called “Lady Death”. It suits the ice queen persona she’s cultivated to survive the fast-paced Toronto Herald. So when Nadine learns that famous (and reclusive) author Dot Voline has died, she doesn’t hesitate to run the obituary…only to discover that Dot is very much alive. Nadine’s screw-up has brought Wesley Chen of the rival Spear no end of joy—she’s been a thorn in his extremely ambitious side for years. But the renewed interest in Dot also surfaced chatter about a mysterious past scandal.

Entirely implausible! A waste of time!
Revisado: 04-05-24
This book is ridiculously bad! The characters make no sense in the setting of today’s world, neither the basic facts about them, nor in how they speak or relate to one another. Don’t waste money or brain cells on this, just read or reread the original Emma.
