Not my favourite of the series

Given the average rating so far, my opinion is an outlier, but here we go anyway.

I did like the previous two instalments in this new Monster Hunter series. The series as a whole brings an interesting perspective on the earlier days of monster hunting.
My problem with this book doesn’t lie there. Rather, what really annoyed me was that this books is padded with a lot of unnecessary philosophising on the benefits of arming everybody and then letting people shoot it out to figure out whose way of life is the best. I’m not really a pacifist, but this is way over the top. I know Correia is a gun nut in a way, but I’d much rather have him post his rants in a blog or something, rather than muddle up an otherwise perfectly good story.

So that’s why I’m only giving it three stars and that’s bit generous given my level of annoyance. Of course, not everybody will be bothered by this and the story otherwise is fairly decent and a good followup to the previous two books. Your mileage may vary.

In Significant Need of Copy-Editing

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of MacLeod Andrews?

Anyone with more experience.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

No

Any additional comments?

One review for all three books, I guess. I just don’t think they deserve more.

This is the final book in a series of three where the plot is supposed to come to a logical conclusion with the help of a number of sci-fi gimmicks and CIA training.
Unfortunately, it feels as if the author forgot about at least a third of the plot lines he started, mostly neglected the evil heroes from the previous two books and completely botched all science he could, thus losing all potential credibility.
I still can’t figure out why a spaceship couldn’t carry live crew on a wormhole transit, but aliens and others could just jump about through gateways, no harm done, even though the gateways were supposed to be wormholes themselves in the first place…
Also, how come the admittedly clever Dr. Stephenson ended up so unerringly brilliant without being ‘improved’ by the second ship and without an active connection to the Rho ship? Furthermore, if he had somehow managed to memorise all Rho ship science on his own, why did he need all the research staff on the Rho project for so many years?

Frankly, I believe this book (as well as its two predecessors) would have benefitted enormously form a serious dose of professional copy-editing. I’m not saying it wasn’t done, but it looks as it was done by some amateur. I’ve read many authors’ first published works and have rarely encountered any with such poor writing, character and plot development.
Which, in all, is a pity, as the premise is quite intriguing in itself.

A Poorly Written Romance Novel

This should be categorised as a romance novel, despite the forensic bits and the gory autopsy details.
The author adds way too many repetitious details about the nonsensical thoughts of the main character that could have been left out without harming the main story one bit. There are also many factually incorrect parts regarding to technology, especially when describing computer interactions.
I guess the editor was asleep when going through the book. Otherwise, it would have been about a third the current length and probably a much better value as a forensic thriller.

Somewhat Shallow

There are definitely some interesting ideas in the book, but the plot is shallow overall and it???s very easy to predict what will happen next.
Another reason for giving a low rating is that???for such a short book???the author often goes into unnecessary detail about the feelings and thoughts of the characters, while more work should have gone into making the mystery more mysterious.
Finally, the focus on catholic believes and ceremonies was too strong for my taste in a (supposedly) science-based book.

A fascinating story in an unexpected setting???the author does a good job tying an old Hindu curse to modern day New York.
Even though some of the retrospective chapters might get a bit boring, there is enough action to keep the listener engaged and on edge.

It???s only a pity that the next stories in the series are not available on Audible, as I really wanted to listen to more of Repairman Jack???s adventures.
