Historia
The Jedi are reeling from Qui-Gon Jinn’s sudden death at the hands of a Sith. Jedi Master Mace Windu’s feelings about Qui-Gon have always been complicated, and have not been made any simpler in death. While they often disagreed, Mace valued Qui-Gon’s unique perspective, and their shared dedication to the Force made them allies. Without Qui-Gon and his unorthodox views, Mace feels out of balance. While considering his fallen friend’s legacy, Mace is surprised to receive a final message from Qui-Gon.

The voice
Revisado: 03-25-25
This was a truly unfortunate situation for the narrator. He clearly did his best but had no real idea what the character was supposed to sound like. His Mace Windu sounds very much like he's doing Lando Calrissian which threw off the entire vibe of his character. The story itself was enchanting and adds a lot to Mace's character for me. I'll have to give the physical copy a read sometime soon to see how it works without the Lando voice.

Historia
Padmé is adjusting to being a wartime senator during the Clone Wars. Her secret husband, Anakin Skwyalker, is off fighting the war, and excels at being a wartime Jedi. In contrast, when Padmé gets the opportunity to see the casualties on the war-torn front lines, she is horrified. Meanwhile, with Padmé on a secret mission, her handmaiden Sabé steps into the role of Senator Amidala, something no handmaiden has done for an extended period of time. While in the Senate, Sabé is equally horrified by the machinations that happen there.

Great - not "too woke"
Revisado: 04-30-23
Firstly, I've read several reviews claiming the representation in this book was out of place, which is ridiculous. Representation doesn't have to serve the plot, and if it took you out of the moment, that reflects more on you than it does the author. There is no Disney Gay agenda.
I thought this book was fantastic. I can understand the criticism that there wasn't necessarily a core plot, but as the finale to a trilogy which was about Padmé, those in her life, and her role in the Galaxy, I thought everything worked together really well.
Highlights for me were the early days of her and Anakin's marriage, her friendship with Sabé, and Sabé's character journey, which all felt like a strong payoff to the series. Interludes focusing on Shmi and Breha were also very nice. The subplot about Saché was interesting, and I enjoyed seeing Naboo's immediate response to the war. Finally, I thought the revelation regarding the Neimoidians was affective and served Padmé's character well, as she faced her unconscious bias.
Worth the read.

Mostly great
Revisado: 04-22-23
Tessa Gratton delivered one of the stronger junior novels in the High Republic initiative so far. It just doesn't stand on it's own like it should, considering the target audience. I was surprised by how much it heavily tied into the YA and Adult novels by the end, making those books necessary reading, which is unusual. That said, as someone who's read them all, it was a fantastic character driven story, that really delivered on themes of family, compromise, and faith.

Revisado: 01-01-23
My one criticism is that many narrators including this one have obviously never heard the voice of certain existing characters featured in the books and go with a completely random voice. Some narrators could use a bit more prep and resources. Otherwise an amazing performance, and fantastic book.

Performance
Revisado: 02-07-22
I don't mind that there weren't any sound effects or music. They're nice to have, but don't make or break a story. The performance however was abysmal. completely flat, emotionless, and with absolutely no personality. Zero effort for character voices, and no understanding of the lore which makes it obvious the reader didn't do her homework. Very poor quality. I don't know who to blame. The narrator or the producer.

Outstanding
Revisado: 01-06-21
This novel feels like the true history of Star Wars, which has always been there, just waiting to finally be told. I kept thinking throughout, that I couldn't believe I hadn't heard this story before, as a lifelong superfan. The writing and story-telling is out of this world, and the premise and characters are unbelievably memorable. This is the most impactful Star Wars story I have read in a very long time, and is absolutely a MUST read

The Music
Revisado: 11-11-20
This book was wonderful. However, I've listened to a lot of SW audio books, and the music playing during this one was insanely, laughably loud. So loud that it drowned out the narrator in several scenes.

Dookus Voice!!!!!
Revisado: 05-30-20
I don't want to bash on the voice actor of Dooku, but why on Earth would they go that route? Every other character was spot-on or at least trying to be. If this was meant to be an audio drama, and he's the main character, I don't see how they could justify doing this with his voice... Very confusing.
