Solid Fairytale Retelling
Revisado: 05-24-24
A solid story. I don't know how much I personally like the intersection of magic and love, but there was a lot of interesting world-building.

A Great Improvement on an Already Solid Start
Revisado: 04-22-24
I should not have waited so long to read this sequel, 1) because I forgot quite a bit of the plot of book 1 and 2) because I really, really enjoyed it! I had a few quibbles with Daughter of the Deep, but they virtually disappeared for this sequel. Some of the pacing was still a little strange, but that's maybe to be expected with a tale of this magnitude, told with this many characters. Thrilled for the sequel~
Also, I'm always a bit lenient when it comes to indie audiobooks because I know how much they can cost and I'm mostly just glad it exists, but this one is really excellent, not just graded on a curve. A vibrant, capable reader who fits the story. Delightful.

Historia
Rosa, also known as Red Riding Hood, is done with wolves and woods. Hou Yi the Archer is tired, and knows she's past her prime. They would both rather just be retired, but that's not what the world has ready for them. When deadly sunbirds begin to ravage the countryside, threatening everything they've both grown to love, the two must join forces. Now blessed and burdened with the hindsight of middle age, they begin a quest that's a reckoning of sacrifices made and mistakes mourned, of choices and family, and the quest for immortality.

Present Bogged Down by the Past
Revisado: 02-09-24
The focus on the past made the present suffer. The exploration of the pasts of these characters was interesting, but the bulk of the present-day plot was underexplored or explained or just not as engaging as I wanted it to be. Interesting overlay of ideas, though.

Historia
All Tessa LaRoche wants is to be the most ordinary person on Barrow Island. After a stint in a mental asylum, she's had quite enough of being anything else, thank you very much. But when a commission at her new reporting job forces her into the path of a not-quite-human murder suspect, Tessa finds that the unordinary is not through with her yet. Spirited away by a devilishly charming Nicolai to the Mirror Lands - a parallel reality manipulated by the immortal Deathless - Tessa loses one of the most precious tethers to her sanity.

Fun Twists. A Better Circus than Caraval
Revisado: 02-09-24
Twisty and turny and fun and spooky. Some of the twists I saw, some of them I definitely did not.
SPOILERS: Two things happen toward the end that I have mixed feelings about. First, I never believed that she might actually be mad, so the mirror sequence where she "kills Nicolai" didn't have a lot of weight to me. House of Salt and Sorrows is my top tier madness plotline, and I hold that as the standard, I guess, and this wasn't there. Tessa's too with it for the whole book, and aside from her missing memories there never feels like there's anything actually mad about her, so why would she actually be mad now? Second, when it was all a dream vision of the future, I wasn't sure if that was cool or if it cheapened the rest of the story. I'm still undecided.
But overall an enjoyable, short read. Made me want to watch Mirror Mask again. Definitely recommend over other popular chaotic circus novel Caraval, which I did not enjoy.

Told the emotions instead of showing them
Revisado: 02-09-24
Oof I wanted to like this one more than I did.
While I had some smaller issues (like the choice to overlap a brother and a lover figure (not actual incest, just weird mind magic)), my biggest issue with this was the balance between showing and telling. I was told about these deep, interpersonal connections, but I never saw it. I came in too late and was kept on the outside. I was told about grief, but I never got to see it or feel it. It kept me on the outside of basically all the feelings and connections, so I never, well, connected to it.
Also, I think it's always tricky to balance a story with future-sight, and this one is built on some characters knowing the future.
So solid, interesting ideas (I was really excited by the blurb) but not enough emotion to pull me in.

Could have used more pirates
Revisado: 02-09-24
It was good, but the world-building/premise isn't a world/story I gravitate toward (I thought there would be a bigger focus on pirates). The characters were good, so if you like automatons and the like more than I do, then you'll probably really like this one.
A high 3star but not quite a 4star

Interesting Ideas but Arbitrary Execution
Revisado: 02-09-24
I didn't love it. There are some interesting ideas here, and I can see the series opening up to an interesting place. However, (and I don't think I'm just YA dystopia jaded) so many of the Things felt arbitrary? With more explanation coming in at the end of the book, some of it gets explained as important, but it was a long time to wait for it. Maybe if you're wild for soulmate stories, or if you're not so mired in YA dystopias (and their proceeding cynicism), this will appeal to you more.

Good. As I often find with novellas, I wanted just a little bit more somewhere to sink my teeth into, but still good.

Sweet but Needed a Little More Plot
Revisado: 02-09-24
A nice, quick read, though I think I wanted just something a little more substantial plot-wise to sink my teeth into. Not quite enough plot to be Plot with Smut, but it felt like it took itself too seriously to be Smut Without Plot (on purpose).

Not Hades/Persephone retelling. Hades/FMC romance
Revisado: 10-03-23
I knew this wasn't really for me very early on, but it was a very easy listen and not super long (and I was having computer trouble I needed to sit through) so I kept going. The easy listening is my biggest plus.
Other than that? :-/
The supporting cast of characters felt cartoony, and while I appreciated the idea of "I'm drawn to him because he's a puzzle" I didn't feel that. I had a hard time getting a real, concrete read on either of our leads based on what was shown to me, rather than what was told. Just didn't work for me.
