Historia
Meredith and Nina Whitson are as different as sisters can be. One stayed at home to raise her children and manage the family apple orchard; the other followed a dream and traveled the world to become a famous photojournalist. But when their beloved father falls ill, Meredith and Nina find themselves together again, standing alongside their cold, disapproving mother, Anya, who even now, offers no comfort to her daughters.

beautiful and not too dark and brilliantly written
Revisado: 04-13-24
I was hesitant to listen to this because I didn't want a book that was all about a very dark period in history. but the way this bounced back and forth in time kept it from getting too heavy without taking away from the heartbreak and horrible situation that happened in St Petersburg during world war II. it was a beautiful book, beautifully written and a really impactful ending that's not about a happy ending but about life.

heartwarming, impossible to put down
Revisado: 11-01-23
I've always been fascinated with the experiences of world war I so I expected to be interested in this book but I literally could not stop listening it was so well written and so engaging. I fell in love with the characters even when they were obnoxious, they felt so real. I think the author did such a great job leveraging letters of the actual women who were over there and then working them into her stories. I'm sad it's over. what a wonderful listen it was. and what amazing women they were

decent story. poor narration and a bit preachy
Revisado: 05-03-23
The story kept me engaged but the narrator really was pretty poor. I did feel it times that the storyline was also a bit preachy and challenging, though from a Christian perspective. I get it. it. just to be clear, this is a Christian story so be prepared for that. I enjoyed it enough that I want to check out the next book in the series, but I hope it's a different narrator!

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

this was a beautiful and touching story. though it was sad at times, it felt quite realistic with how the characters interacted with each other and with their experiences. and it really was beautiful.

at times wonderful, tedious, disappointing
Revisado: 05-05-22
I hung in there as long as I could but I'm returning the book. Some of the writing is wonderfully lush and rich, some of the stories are so interesting, and the feeling of being back in time was really interesting and intriguing. Other stories are tedious and drawn out. Most of the time I really didn't like the main character, just very self-absorbed. I was hanging in there to see how she would evolve, she did a little bit but it just felt like listening to an adolescent go on and on and on. Also a plot twist that I am not interested in reading about.

Historia
One evening in 1951, an itinerant storyteller arrives unannounced at a house in the Irish countryside. In exchange for a bed and a warm meal, he invites his hosts and their neighbors to join him by the wintry fireside and begins to tell formative stories of Ireland's history. Ronan, a nine-year-old boy, grows so entranced by the storytelling that, when the old man leaves abruptly under mysterious circumstances, the boy devotes himself to finding him again.

for lovers of Ireland and storytelling
Revisado: 12-21-21
Wow. What a wonderful surprise. I have been on the fence about listening to this ever since it first came out, because I really like plot lines and I understood this would not be that kind of book. I will say that while the point of the book is not the plot line there is a plot there is a logical flow of thought.
The thing I love the most is it essentially tells the history of Ireland in such a wonderful way that makes it easy to see it through the eyes of the people who were there. And the author, as others have said, was the perfect one to read this, including how he gave different characters their own voice. This is a story I will listen to again and again in the future.
If you are interested in Ireland's history, if you love well told stories, this book is a gift.

It was a time of legend, as the last shadows of the mighty Roman conqueror faded from the captured Isle of Britain. Meanwhile, across a vast sea, bloody war shattered a peace that had flourished for 2,000 years in the doomed kingdom of Atlantis. This is the remarkable adventure of Charis, the courageous princess from Atlantis who escapes the terrible devastation of her land, and of the fabled seer and druid prince Taliesin, singer at the dawn of the age. Great story, better than I remembered
Revisado: 05-09-21
Being a lifelong fan of King Arthur stories this book series was an early favorite of mine. It was fun having it read to me for the first time. I think the narrator did a great job with one small caveat.. when she was speaking with a formal voice she spoke with what sounded an awful lot like an East Indian accent not Celtic. While I wish it was a better match it was actually kind of amusing and still brought the right character and intonations to the storyline. I wouldn't avoid this book for that reason but it was kind of funny.

Amazing, engaging story that will disrupt life
Revisado: 03-21-21
I thought I was pretty much done with world war II stories. It's not my favorite time in history though I love historical fiction. But this book grabbed me in the beginning and didn't let me go. I found it hard to do anything other than continuous listening to it. it is hard to describe the impact; it's emotional, traumatic, but also hopeful and healing. This is one of the best books I've listened to for a while.
Story, characters, narrator...just perfect.

Universally relavent exploration of identity
Revisado: 01-23-21
Wow this was a wonderful unexpected surprise. I am a middle-aged, white woman of Irish-English-German stock. My mom would tell stories of the very Irish experiences in her family but my generation like the author had none of that. I always longed for tradition and culture that I felt was missing, and focused so much on what's authentic and heirlooms and artifacts. This was just a brilliant way to help us all to recognize the relevance of our lives where they are at. I'm going to have to listen to this again and bookmark or make some notes. I'm so glad I took time to listen to this.
