Historia
When you think about Christmas, you likely picture mangers, glowing fireplaces, sweet carolers, and snow-blanketed hills. But behind all this bright magic, there’s something much darker lurking in the shadows. In The Dead of Winter, Cambridge-trained historian Sarah Clegg delves deep into the folklore of the Christmas season in Europe, detailing the way its terrifying and often debaucherous past continues to haunt and entertain us now in the twenty-first century.

An Amazing Dive into the the History of Winter Tales
Revisado: 01-14-25
An amazing deep dive into the rich history of Christmas beasts and traditions. I learned so much from this work and thought it walked a perfect line of historically based facts and entertaining story telling. The fact that the author has taken the time to personally experience the modern day versions of the traditions she describes really adds to the work!

Historia
From New York Times best-selling author Stephen Graham Jones comes a novel that is equal parts psychological horror and cutting social commentary on identity politics and the American-Indian experience. Fans of Jordan Peele and Tommy Orange will love this story as it follows the lives of four American-Indian men and their families, all haunted by a disturbing, deadly event that took place in their youth. Years later, they find themselves tracked by an entity bent on revenge, totally helpless as the culture and traditions they left behind catch up to them in a vengeful way.

Historia
Coyote America is both an environmental and a deep natural history of the coyote. It traces both the five-million-year-long biological story of an animal that has become the "wolf" in our backyards and its cultural evolution from a preeminent spot in Native American religions to the hapless foil of the Road Runner. A deeply American tale, the story of the coyote in the American West and beyond is a sort of Manifest Destiny in reverse.

An incredible & Powerful Title
Revisado: 06-20-24
An incredible title and well worth the listen. The interweaving of biology, social, and political perspectives surrounding coyotes and the ways in which humans have reacted to these amazing animals is both well balanced and powerful. While challenging to read through at points when faced with the cruelty with which this species and others have and continue to undergo at human hand, the book's unwavering and objective view point makes it a must read.

Historia
Once every year, Scoutmaster Tim Riggs leads a troop of boys into the Canadian wilderness for a weekend camping trip - a tradition as comforting and reliable as a good ghost story around a roaring bonfre. The boys are a tight-knit crew. There’s Kent, one of the most popular kids in school; Ephraim and Max, also well-liked and easygoing; then there’s Newt the nerd and Shelley the odd duck. For the most part, they all get along and are happy to be there - which makes Scoutmaster Tim’s job a little easier.

fantastic humanist creeping horror
Revisado: 10-22-23
Picked up this title after a recommendation from a horror anthology editor Ellen Datlow and was not disappointed. A slow but well paced build that showcases the horror associated with mob mentality and how quickly the delicate balance of culture crumbles when faced with the unknown. Narration is well done in general but with some portions that are a bit cringy as the male imitation of female characters tend to add years to the age of those characters.

Interesting Concept and Good Writing
Revisado: 05-14-23
Interesting and unique concepts as to be expected from Gibson and narration was well done. The wrap up of the story does seem a bit rushed but I suppose it reflects how fast all of the events in the story occur. Still worth the read.

With this outrageous new novel, China Miéville has written one of the strangest, funniest, and flat-out scariest books you will read this—or any other—year. The London that comes to life in Kraken is a weird metropolis awash in secret currents of myth and magic, where criminals, police, cultists, and wizards are locked in a war to bring about—or prevent—the End of All Things.

Historia
In a world renowned even within a galaxy full of wonders, a crime within a war. For one man it means a desperate flight, and a search for the one - maybe two - people who could clear his name. For his brother it means a life lived under constant threat of treachery and murder. And for their sister, even without knowing the full truth, it means returning to a place she'd thought abandoned forever.

Well developed environment but lacking direction
Revisado: 01-14-23
I've read a few of Iain's Culture series and really enjoy the level of detail added to the environment. That being said Matter does seem to lack in a strong plot line. There is a loose set of events but none of the plot points really are resolved in any way apart from a rushed ambiguous ending.
