First book of Paolini's I've actively disliked. No crossover between this and book 1, except for a few similar technologies. It's not a sequel and doesn't add anything at all to the first book, which I liked.

The beginning was meh....and it went downhill from there. Very unsatisfying. I almost didn't finish it, but because I love Eragon and the first book in this universe, I kept expecting more. Something at the end that would make it worthwhile. Some mind-blowing discovery that would make it worth my time to listen. Nope.

The sound effects were annoying after a while. The reader did ok, but I counted on the performance because the whole presentation of the book was annoying.

I'm enjoying this series more than I expected, right until I got to book 3. There's a long sequence where two of the main characters are texting and the reader is doing something so annoying with the texts I can't stand it. No spoilers, but she's actually saying reptively, dozens of times before each and every very short message:

Jennifer Text:
Decebel Text:
Jennifer Text:
Decebel Text:

If the messages were long, maybe I could get past it, but a there's a stream of short, choppy dialog that goes on over 5 minutes or more. Every few words the narrator adds the character name followed by the word Text. Why would anyone do this? The narrator is skilled enough to give each of the main characters their own accent. Decebel has a deeper voice and a Romanian accent and Jennifer is American. It's not like I'd have any problems picking out which character is saying what. They should rework all of those scenes with the prolonged texting.

Other than this, I'm enjoying the charactes, the suspense, the pacing. There's a few unusual twists about werewolves in this world that keeps things hopping.

*****Spoilers*****

I have read the entire series, before and after this book, and enjoyed them all, but this one book nags at me.

Elspeth's mother is so horrible, if I were in her shoes, I would literally try to assassinate her. I would wait until she was sleeping and come after her. I would go to the council and demand her execution.

I probably wouldn't be in the mood to see my father for decades. I may not cut my younger sisters off entirely but I would demand a lot of space.

It bugs me that Elspeth's rebellion is so passive -- running away and inflicting self harm.

Beyond this weakness of character, the book is well written, well edited, and has a great narrator. I hope we see a book from this branch of the family soon and that Martine receives what she deserves.

The Segonian was a phenomenal book. Most of the plot of this book is given away in book 1. There are a couple of surprises but too much of the plot was revealed for this book to be enjoyable. it should have been a novella or simply skipped and move to the next character.

Big fan of the author, but this is terrible. Reminds me of an old school harlequin with characters I don't like. I have forced myself to listen to 19 chapters, waiting for the good stuff but I now believe there is no good stuff coming. The narrator tries to affect a British accent but it doesn't work and the cadence is weird.

Chris Hayes does a remarkable job of laying out historical context and making it all relevant to current events. It's interesting and thought-provoking. I agree with his conclusions and highly recommend the book!

He is also a talented narrator and I would listen to something he read again, even in a different genre.

This is my favorite of the trilogy. I read it first the day it came out, and then I heard Sophie Eastlake read it. She wins, hands down...outstanding performance. I love the entire short little trilogy but this is my favorite of the 3...great plot, hot love scenes, interesting action sequences. I feel like this book is setting up a future full length novel about the fae. More please!!!!

I really enjoyed the book. The author seemed to go out of her way to take out bits of plot she's used in the past and tackle things from a new angle. For instance, there's no scene where Basil takes his first bite of food in centuries and rhapsodizes over how good it tastes or how long it's been since he's eaten...and Sherry accepts the reality of vampires with more ease than some of the past heroines. Marguerite didn't even set them up.

The book has some fresh new ideas, interesting twists and plot devices she hasn't used before...but I won't give any spoilers. Great narration. It's a must read for fans of the series!

I'm such a huge fan of the series, I stayed up all night to get it and I've listened to it twice in four days. I liked seeing Charles and Anna together. They seem more stable as a couple and as individuals than in any of the previous books. Anna finally meets one of Charles old flings who she doesn't kill. You learn a little more about witchcraft, the fae, Charles' past, and meet people he and Brother Wolf have known for decades and like. I don't want to say much about the plot, but it's well paced, has some interesting twists and turns, and an unexpected ending.

My big frustration is that in the previous books, the author started some significant story arcs and has continued to leave them hanging. The Fae have declared themselves independent of the laws of the United States. Samuel wants a child. Asil is acting as a minor enforcer for Bran to scare young wolves into behaving and is maybe interested in Sage? Dead Heat barely moves the wider plots along.

In spite of that, it is an excellent book. If you're a fan, it's a must read.

This feels like a blatant knock-off of several other series, primarily Eragon. Boy finds magic stone in the woods, goes on a quest to elude evil king and get to a rebel kingdom with the help of a wise old man, add dragons and dragon riders, humans, dwarves, elves, parents who may or may not be evil, an ancient language. Substitute Necromancers for Shades. There's the odd dash of Harry Potter (incendio!) in some of the spell casting and in the way relatives have sacrificed themselves to save him. A bit of Tolkien in some of the naming. I'm enjoying listening to this partially because it is a good plot, partially because the narrator is so much better than the guy who read Eragon, and partially because it's become kind of humorous to see how many plot devices from other authors I can pick out.

It seems to be geared towards a younger audience than I expected. The category listed is SciFi: Fantasy: Epic and I think it would be more appropriate under Teens: SciFi. This is not really an adult book, but I'm listening anyway and enjoying it.
