Excellent perspective
Revisado: 11-30-24
At first I thought this was just a series of vignettes, but as the chapters progressed I realized the stories were weaving together. This is one of my favorite writing techniques; when you get to know each character, their story, and their perspectives, and then midway through the book their stories begin to converge.
I enjoyed how Tommy Orange gave so much insight into each character, and wrote such interesting backstories. The characters are rich and this story is important, I think.
I recommend this book, especially in audiobook form, as the narration is very good, and, I believe, lends itself to the story to help differentiate from the many characters and add to their singularity,
I was riveted by the last 1/4 of the book and could not stop listening.
The only thing I didn’t care for was how long and drawn out the narration was from a key character’s point of view just before the extraordinary end chapters. Less is more, and in this case, it seemed the author allowed his ego to supersede his own normally nuanced writing. I’m surprised this chapter wasn’t edited better. But it’s a very small portion of the novel and should not in any way deter future readers.
I recommend this book, and see why it has been awarded accolades.

Tornadoes, cyclones, tsunamis… Weather can be deadly – especially when it strikes without warning. Millions of Americans could soon find themselves at the mercy of violent weather if the public data behind lifesaving storm alerts gets privatized for personal gain. In his first Audible Original feature, New York Times best-selling author and journalist Michael Lewis delivers hard-hitting research on not-so-random weather data – and how Washington plans to release it.

Enlightening.
Revisado: 07-30-24
I didn’t know ANY of this information. I found much of it genuinely alarming to see what controls our government has taken in recent years to keep the public from knowing data and truths. This was really engaging, but the bigger point is that it will affect my vote this November. Thank you!

Historia
William Waters grew up in a house silenced by tragedy, where his parents could hardly bear to look at him, much less love him—so when he meets the spirited and ambitious Julia Padavano in his freshman year of college, it’s as if the world has lit up around him. With Julia comes her family, as she and her three sisters are inseparable: Sylvie, the family’s dreamer, is happiest with her nose in a book; Cecelia is a free-spirited artist; and Emeline patiently takes care of them all.

A Love Song to Louisa May Alcott Fans
Revisado: 07-26-24
I love a nuanced, well-written story about sisters. Napolitano immerses the reader in her gentle prose, weaving a complex story depicting how you can love your family, stay loyal, or need to step away, and the big and small ways you can be betrayed by those you love the most.
I adore Little Women and all things Alcott. While I appreciate the gentle nudges and winks the author made to a beloved book, Napolitano took it a step further with her portrayal of Charlie reflecting Bronson Alcott, with nods to his Transcendentalism and the poets with whom he was surrounded.
Geraldine Brooks said she wrote March because she couldn’t believe Marmee was so perfect as she was portrayed. Napolitano addresses this with her dichotomy of too perfect Marmee to ultra fallible Rose. I loved this peek into a mirror of what the March sisters could have been in present day, with a rigid, unsupportive mother, and a patriarch less than the heroic Mr. March.
And kudos to not making the Padavano sisters carbon copies of Meg, Jo, Beth, & Amy. I didn’t want this book to end and now I long to sit with the author to discuss this rich novel in depth.

Cozy Town, Big Secrets
Revisado: 12-29-23
I loved this cozy Irish mystery! The citizens of Duneen are a quirky bunch. As their stories unfold, their personalities bloom, and Graham Norton relays it all with quiet humor and a bit of tongue in cheek.
I loved the character of PJ, and I enjoyed his point of view most. This was a story of loss and not being able to let go. A story of dreams unrealized and disappointments, and long-held grudges. There were more secrets revealed in this story than I would have guessed. I’ll definitely be reading more Graham Norton! I hope he narrates everything he writes.

Dishy & Appalling
Revisado: 09-09-23
I loved it. Capote was so self-aggrandizing and wildly disdainful of any human condition that he toed the line of a sociopathic social climber. I loved how the author penned this story of the glittering elite socialites, and their betrayal by Capote. I whizzed thru this in 3 days because I kept thinking it couldn’t get any shallower, and then it did. The nearly nihilistic choices Capote made illustrate how an over-inflated ego, paired with drugs and excessive alcohol destroy relationships. Still, I couldn’t look away from this delicious train wreck.

Historia
The relationship between Freddie Mercury and Jim Hutton evolved over several months in 1984 and 1985. Even when they first slept together, Hutton had no idea who Mercury was, and, when the star told him his name, it meant nothing to him. Hutton worked as a barber at the Savoy Hotel and retained his job and his lodgings in Sutton, Surrey, for two years after moving in with Mercury. He was never fully assimilated into Mercury's jet-setting lifestyle, but, from 1985 until Mercury's death in 1991, he was closer to him than anyone and knew all Mercury's closest friends.

Revisado: 07-14-23
First, I’m a huge Freddy Mercury fan. So of course I wanted to hear his Partner’s story. And I’m so glad I did! BUT, this book could have been at least an hour shorter. A lot of tedium about every single detail.
Im glad I read it and recommend it to the big Mercury fans but if you’re only looking to read one single biography about Freddy, this probably isn’t for you.
The narration was VERY GOOD! And this was a poignant story.

At the end of the Second World War, Cyril Conroy combines luck and a single canny investment to begin an enormous real estate empire, propelling his family from poverty to enormous wealth. His first order of business is to buy the Dutch House, a lavish estate in the suburbs outside of Philadelphia. Meant as a surprise for his wife, the house sets in motion the undoing of everyone he loves. Patchett's writing is sublime!
Revisado: 04-21-22
Patchett does it again ~ weaving a quiet little story about a family, with quiet little outrages that would be hard to swallow in real life. as always, the character development is outstanding. and somehow, I found myself more devastated that the book was over than that a character had died. I loved thos story. and u cannot imagine it narrated by any other than Tom Hanks. he brought Danny to life.

Historia
Narrator Dan Stevens ( Downton Abbey) presents an uncanny performance of Mary Shelley's timeless gothic novel, an epic battle between man and monster at its greatest literary pitch. In trying to create life, the young student Victor Frankenstein unleashes forces beyond his control, setting into motion a long and tragic chain of events that brings Victor to the very brink of madness. How he tries to destroy his creation, as it destroys everything Victor loves, is a powerful story of love, friendship, scientific hubris, and horror.

I HIGHLY recommend this book AND this performance. I'll definitely listen to this one again.

Engrossing!
Revisado: 05-01-21
Du Maurier is a master. I was completely drawn into this tale of duplicity where nothing is entirely black or white, but exquisitely human shades of grey. The depth and breadth of the storyline does not disappoint and I often sat and listened linger than my drive or chore required. The author fleshed out quirky, stmpathetic and diabolical characters. Perfect matched narrator.
