Picked this up because I thought the concept was interesting. Unfortunately that is only VERY loosely based on the story of Persephone. After the main character meets the person who had her kidnapped she pretty immediately goes full Stockholm syndrome. Throughout the book MC alternates between naive/dim to intelligent/clever and despite having been raised in a very isolated environment with no education or means to have developed this cleverness. The only thing that allowed me to finish was a great performance by Ariel Blake. Otherwise would have DNF'd at 50%.

Love this series and will be reading the physical copy but DNF'd the audible version a couple hours in because I couldn't take the narration of Mariah POV. Mariah is made to sound like more like a poor approximation of a middle aged southern white woman than a 19 year old southern black woman. Also Valec sounds like more grandpa who smoked two packs a day since he was 12, not the smooth 100s of years old cambion who looks like he's in his late teens/early 20s that he's been characterized as. They honestly could have stuck with Joniece Abbott Pratt for Mariah's POV and it would be been much better. I will be buying the book because I like this author and the way she writes.

I was walking through a bookstore when I say "Jordan Ifueko" on this book which I didn't know was out at the time and I almost jumped with excitement because that's how much I love her stories. This is a wonderful story that will make you smile and but also very upset with the world that delivers a very clear message to us all while not beating you over the head with it. The author used the analogy of reverse Cinderella describes the story so well and the narrator did an amazing job portraying all the different characters and bringing them to life. That said, this author continues to be on my "if they write it, I read it" list.

An excellent end to an amazing trilogy. I really appreciated how imperfect the cast of characters were, how they all developed over the course of the series, and how their arcs were wrapped up. But my goodness, John Gwynne broke my heart many times. 6 stars!

I loved The Blood Trails and wanted to love this too, but between the main character being insufferably reckless, plot lines left unresolved/half hazardly tied up this just didn't hit the way I hoped it would. I think the author would have had time for this if we were getting a third book which there is certainly enough story for. Also the lack of other perspectives or just back story on the side characters was sorely missed as it would have added some needed depth to the situations the characters go through and their relationships with each other. There is certainly plenty of opportunity for spin offs. I just hope the author gets the time to flesh everything out the right way next time around.

An awesome story with just the right dose of magic. Very solid world building and character development. Although I saw the broad theme of the plot twist early on, there were some aspects I didn't see coming. Looking forward to book two!

I loved the concept of this story, but it got VERY heavy handed with the message having the MC go on rants almost every chapter. If even half of the rants were instead spent fully fleshing out the world the story is set in and building the relationships, this would have been a much better read.

A.J. Beckles reading pace was a little fast for my liking so the point that for the first time ever I slowed down the speed so it sounded more normal. Jordan Cobb was great, but it was a little strange hearing an southern accent from her while the book is clearly based in an African like setting.
