Historia
As commander of the powerful Special Branch, Thomas Pitt has the job of keeping Britain safe from spies and traitors. So there' s no obvious reason why he is suddenly ordered to investigate two minor incidents: the blood, hair, and shards of glass discovered outside the home of naval weapons expert Dudley Kynaston, and the simultaneous disappearance of Mrs. Kynaston' s beautiful lady's maid. But weeks later, when the mutilated body of an unidentified young woman is found near Kynaston' s home, Pitt realizes that this is no ordinary police investigation.

Historia
As soon as Lyddie crosses the old stone bridge into Creech Cross, there's a strong feeling of stepping, not so much back in time, as out of it. Ancient magic overlaid with dark witchcraft and superstition bleeds into the present day, events, and people as woven into the fabric of history as the age-old tracks traversing the land itself. Local people barely acknowledge her, and the incomers are that bit too friendly, until gradually it becomes clear she and her husband are in danger.

Not my favorite
Revisado: 08-01-24
Not my favorite book in the series. Penny has become very whiny and James has little conviction. The story was good but man, the main characters were really irritating in this book. Hoping things look up in the next book!!

Lord Rosemorran has purchased a wax figure of a beautiful reclining woman and asks Stoker to incorporate a clockwork mechanism to give the Rosemorran Collection its own Sleeping Beauty in the style of Madame Tussaud’s. But when Stoker goes to cut the mannequin open to insert the mechanism, he makes a gruesome discovery: this is no wax figure. The mannequin is the beautifully preserved body of a young woman who was once very much alive. But who would do such a dreadful thing, and why?

An apt conclusion
Revisado: 04-24-24
After absolutely falling in love with these characters, I can’t believe I’m at the last book. Finally hearing Veronica call Stoker, “My Love.” I’m only sad it’s over. What a beautiful love story woven into these 9 mysteries. Well written, witty, and a strong heroine who proved she didn’t need a man, but yearned for a partner. A twin flame whose soul matched hers. 9 books and I would read 20 more.

Good ending to the series
Revisado: 01-23-24
I appreciated the way the story finally wrapped up. Although I will say that the fact that the 4th book ended the way it did and this book made NO mention of what was the entire premise of the 4th book bothered me. The fact that Lydia was supposed to be dead and no one knew she wasn’t, and this book just moves on without a mention of it really left an unfinished feeling for me. Overall it was an entertaining series with a happy ending.

Definitely a slow start. I stuck with it though and about two hours in it finally hooked me. Very intriguing and the history was great.
