Interesting topic
Revisado: 03-15-25
For an abbreviated history, this was more a chronology of Holy Roman Emperors with brief asides to what they did. The book spent very little time IMO on significant historical figures like Charlemagne and Frederic Barbarossa but then spent a ton of time on the reformation. The focus on the reformation I do understand for its importance to the history of the empire but I was surprised how much was breezed over. I suppose this was just too abbreviated for my taste.

Historia
Here are the thrills, grandeur, and unabashed fun of the Greek myths, stylishly retold by Stephen Fry. The legendary writer, actor, and comedian breathes life into ancient tales, from Pandora's box to Prometheus's fire, and transforms the adventures of Zeus and the Olympians into emotionally resonant and deeply funny stories, without losing any of their original wonder. Learned notes from the author offer rich cultural context. This volume is a doorway into a captivating world.

Excellent!
Revisado: 02-25-25
Stephen Fry’s narration was easy to listen to and his voice soothing. His writing style comical, engaging, and informative all at the same time. This has been one of my favorite audible books in a while!

Historia
In the United States, teenagers can focus on one task for only sixty-five seconds at a time, and office workers average only three minutes. Like so many of us, Johann Hari was finding that constantly switching from device to device and tab to tab was a diminishing and depressing way to live. He tried all sorts of self-help solutions—even abandoning his phone for three months—but nothing seemed to work. So Hari went on an epic journey across the world to interview the leading experts on human attention—and he discovered that everything we think we know about this crisis is wrong.

Very interesting material but left-leaning interpretation leaves a LOT to be desired
Revisado: 06-29-24
The material and studies were very interesting. The authors political ideology showed through a bit much and made it hard at times to keep going. My point: He was advocating for the government takeover of social media companies because the companies aren’t doing enough and are motivated solely by profit. You think the government is going to do it better? History has proven that not to be the case. People need to band together to solve the problem; insert story about the author being gay and feminism and oppression. Also, climate change is to blame. Oh and by the way, there’s some Covid stuff in here too which I thought was funny since the author was critical of the governments response which only reminded me of his earlier position advocating government intervention. My biggest issue with all his positions was that YOU are powerless to solve the problem because of systemic issues and needed some outside force to help.
Again, the material is interesting but the author is advocating for some extreme positions that make some pretty big leaps in my opinion.

Historia
In this stunning audiobook, Malcolm Gladwell takes us on an intellectual journey through the world of "outliers" - the best and the brightest, the most famous, and the most successful. He asks the question: What makes high-achievers different? His answer is that we pay too much attention to what successful people are like, and too little attention to where they are from: That is, their culture, their family, their generation, and the idiosyncratic experiences of their upbringing.

Correlation doesn’t equal causation
Revisado: 04-28-24
The author reads the material really well and there are loads of interesting vignettes throughout. Truthfully, despite my low rating, I really enjoyed this book but the conclusion is a huge stretch. I’d wager anyone who bothers to think critically through the assertions made would agree that correlation among the cherry picked examples does not equal causation especially when considering the authors bias on the topic as evidenced by his epilogue. Interesting yes, scientific no.

Historia
Have you ever found yourself wondering “Why do I want more than I have?” Michael Easter, author of The Comfort Crisis and one of the world’s leading experts on behavior change, shows that the problem isn’t you. The problem is your scarcity mindset, left over from our ancient ancestors. They had to constantly seek and consume to survive because vital survival tools like food, material goods, information, and power were scarce and hard to find. But with our modern ability to easily fulfill our ancient desire for more, our hardwired “scarcity brain” is now backfiring.

If you liked comfort crisis, you’ll enjoy this book. Worth the read/listen IMO. Read by the author and makes a good follow-up to comfort crisis by touching on. Why our brain respond a certain way.

There is a war on masculinity, and everywhere we look—on every front we hold sacred—we can see the painful reminders of this collapsing order. The chaos and crisis we are experiencing today should be a signal for men everywhere to rise up; to fight to preserve our way of life by once again walking the ancient paths. But this isn’t a journey that need be taken alone.

Historia
How did Fidel Castro fool the CIA for a generation? Why did Neville Chamberlain think he could trust Adolf Hitler? Why are campus sexual assaults on the rise? Do television sitcoms teach us something about the way we relate to each other that isn't true? While tackling these questions, Malcolm Gladwell was not solely writing a book for the page. He was also producing for the ear. In the audiobook version of Talking to Strangers, you’ll hear the voices of people he interviewed - scientists, criminologists, military psychologists.

Deceptive title
Revisado: 04-04-23
I have read Gladwell before and have usually really liked his work. Allow me to summarize this book: Sometimes people’s body language doesn’t match their intention so never trust your instincts. There you go, save your money and time. Regardless of the political undertone, I was expecting some conclusion here rather than just a bunch of case studies about how deceptive our instincts can be. Really disappointed here.

Really a great book, even if you don’t like the genre. The performance by the cast though, beyond comparison. Truly top notch!
