Interesting, unique take on a murder mystery. Narration is stellar as always. I sped through it and then was sad because I sped through it! I think I’ll start back at Book One again.

Then got seriously ridiculous and I struggled to finish it. Wish I could get that time back. Narrator couldn’t decide what accent each character had and they shifted in the middle. Ethnic slur from the male hair stylist shocked me.

Nah. Not a good story or narration.

It started out with some promise and after a few chapters went straight downhill. I didn’t even finish it, it was too ridiculous to continue listening.

The premise was interesting and perhaps in a better writer’s hands it could have gone somewhere. Alas, it was not to be.

The narrator sounded almost AI generated and brought nothing to the material.

Just not a good choice on my part.

This was the second book in the series I listened to and realized I didn’t care about any of the characters at all. I especially grew to dislike Mack by this point. Overly simplified dialogue, the awful Scottish accent, and a dumb story made this one a miss for me. I don’t plan on continuing the series.

I enjoyed this book quite a bit and finished it in about 2 days. New author to me but I’ll be listening to the others in the Dan Riley series. Definitely worth a listen!

I loved this book. It was deep, touching, and full of heart. Alan’s honesty and dedication to sharing his life and Tommy Darling’s carried the book. And of course, his brogue made it that much more listenable. One of my favorites of all time.

I was smitten with this series and Lady H and Flo. In fact, I think I've listened to the first 3 books about 4x each. It felt like a visit with friends.

And now, I diverge from the maddening crowd opinion:

The last two books have had a very different energy and I can't quite put my finger on it. This one, even more than the last, was unsettling. The ancillary characters were boring and I couldn't even keep track of who was who and what was what. Each book has had its share of those but they all had characteristics that made them stand out. Not so here, unfortunately. Not only did I get lost on all the characters but I didn't even care enough to figure it out.

As for the main characters Lady H and Flo, while we did get a glimpse into how LH now openly(ish) speaks of Flo as a friend, mostly their relationship and how they work together doesn't grow a lot here. Some of the same tired things get dragged out in obvious ways and it's almost expected now.

I wondered if the divergence in energy/tone of the last two books can be attributed to a ghost writer because I can't account for any other reason why things feel so different to me. The Southern Sisters books (Mouse and Sister) carried on and grew the relationships between the sisters over the course of the series. I'm not sure why this isn't happening here.

You'll see that I am in the minority of opinions about this book (and the last one, as well) but my comments are tempered with disappointment because I love these characters and this series. I hope the next one is better.

Signed,
Sad in Maryland

The Lady Hardcastle mysteries are among my very favorites and when I saw a new one that had somehow slipped past me, I did a happy dance inside. I couldn't wait to dig in.

The more I listened, though, the less I liked it. Lady H has always had an interesting air about her but in this book, she seemed imperious and too-big-for-her-britches which is not how she usually comes across. And while we can acknowlege that LH and Flo are an amazing duo, the deification here was over the top.

I was hoping to hear more about the mysterious person from their past who was supposed to be dead or her brother's wedding and trip. Unfortunately, this seemed to be a convoluted story that didn't showcase the relationships we've come to know.

(And this is from someone who has listened to all the previous books probably 5x each.)

Elizabeth Knowlden was excellent, as always. But the story didn't resonate and it almost made me dislike Lady H and Flo. Yikes.

(Your mileage may vary. Others seemed to enjoy the book so take this with a grain of salt. Maybe I'm in a bad mood or something.)

YEY! Finally we learn how Flo and Emily came together (no spoilers in this review) but it was nice to get the backstory. A typical cozy with the trademarked british snark is my cup of tea. We got to hear from the ladies that work in Lady Hardcastle's house and really get a sense of who they are.

Elizabeth Knowelden is, by far, one of the best narrators I've come across. This is a perfect marriage of story and narrator and I can't imagine anyone else speaking for these characters. (Sort of how I feel for Sister and Mouse in the Southern Sisters mysteries.)

If you like the series, this is a great addition. Highly recommended!

Relatively pleasant little story

For me, the mark of a good book is whether I can't wait to get back to it. If I notice I'm dragging my feet, then it's a sure sign the story isn't grabbing me. "And one last thing ..." mostly fell into the former category. It was a fairly pleasant listen overall and the story flowed well.

I did find it a little too convenient that she easily fell into a relationship with Lefty but that's nitpicking. As chick lit goes, it was fine.

(Even I notice the words i'm using: pleasant, fine, etc. It wasn't a barn-burner; rather, a decent listen. Confession: I'm glad i got it in the 2-for-1 sale.)
