Historia
In David Lipsky's view, David Foster Wallace was the best young writer in America. Wallace's pieces for Harper's magazine in the '90s were, according to Lipsky, like hearing for the first time the brain voice of everybody I knew: Here was how we all talked, experienced, thought. It was like smelling the damp in the air, seeing the first flash from a storm a mile away. You knew something gigantic was coming.

Great alliteration of voices!

After listening to Lipski on Wallace I look forward to learning more. Wallace not Lipski. I believe this kid has great promise and look forward to diving in to his corpus.

Excellent set of metaphorical, allegorical and historical accounts weaved together analogically. Best to read it in parallel with her narration.

Historia
Is John McCain "for real?" That's the question David Foster Wallace set out to explore when he first climbed aboard Senator McCain's campaign caravan in February 2000. It was a moment when McCain was increasingly perceived as a harbinger of change, the anticandidate whose goal was "to inspire young Americans to devote themselves to causes greater than their own self-interest".

Great short introduction to DFW
Revisado: 10-29-22
This is a great short example of the brilliance of DFW as the seminal writer of his age. He is the master of the first person narrative account, laced with pithy observations about the absurdity of life.

Listening to the sample led me to preempt the listening of another book.
Liftoff is exciting, dramatic and inspiring. Has parallels to a Tracy Kidder book.
Well, time to finish the other read...

Historia
"Walden. Yesterday I came here to live." That entry from the journal of Henry David Thoreau, and the intellectual journey it began, would by themselves be enough to place Thoreau in the American pantheon. His attempt to "live deliberately" in a small woods at the edge of his hometown of Concord has been a touchstone for individualists and seekers since the publication of Walden in 1854. But there was much more to Thoreau than his brief experiment in living at Walden Pond.

Good brief biography with minor date errors
Revisado: 12-20-19
I enjoyed this bio ask a quick and dirty listen. Having been curious about the cofounder of Stanford U, this fit the bill.
There are two errors.
One in the first sentence. He was born twelve years after the war of 1812, not twelve days.
Second, the date given for his son’s death is years before it actually happened.
Curious how to such glaring errors in the transcription got through.
Ok otherwise...

Historia
Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, Tara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Her family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when one of Tara’s older brothers became violent. When another brother got himself into college, Tara decided to try a new kind of life. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge University.
