Bird Box's overall concept is interesting and in Stephen King's hands, it could be crafted into a good book. In Josh Malerman's hands it's nothing more than stage directions. Characters are less than one dimensional and women are whimpering, simpering nuisances. Or is that just due to the narrator's poor effort? Give me The Walking Dead's Michonne or Carol or Game if Throne's Daenarys Targayan any day over any of Bird Box's female characters. Not just disappointing. Annoying and uninspired.

I've seen the film version of Breakfast at Tiffany's at least four times, but I hadn't read or listened to the book before now. If you've done neither, read or listen to the book first. I wish I had. Quite a few differences and more heart-wrenching than the film version (which is still very good). I got a better sense of who Holly was with the book. I love Michael C. Hall but didn't think he was the best choice for reader. I felt he missed some nuances that could have equaled an excellent performance. Somewhat monotone (a la Dexter narration).

Great story, but the narrator elevates this book to one of the best audiobooks I've listened to ever. The "dispatcher" idea and overall all premise deserves a more in depth exploration and I hope it's coming. Don't offer anything up without Zachary Quinto, John Scalzi!

Too much self promotion, not enough zen

The author (and narrator) claims to shun the self-promoting nature of autobiographies, but 90% of this audiobook is shameless self promotion. Poor sound quality which the author claims is "punk." Whatever. He needs to spend a few more years in quiet contemplation and try this topic again for a chance at redemption. Otherwise it's just "I was a cool geek, now I'm a cool zen master. But I'm really super humble despite me doing very little here except telling you stories that prove how cool I am."

I listened to this book during the 2016 election season. There is nothing new under the sun. Whatever politicians do now, it was already done during the era of Rome's world dominance. Henry VII's six wives? He was an amateur compared to Romans. This history of the post-Ides of March Caesers is exhaustive but fascinating with its attention to detail. Excellent narration. Want to become an early Rome aficionado? This book is for you!

Mesmerizing and magical. Patti Smith writes about portholes that lead to other realities and her book is one for the listener. Heartbreaking, funny and wonderfully obsessive (coffee and crime shows). I enjoyed every minute of it and I wish it never ended.

Will Wheaton's performance is great here. The book itself is light fun, but could have been tightened up in editing. I found myself figuring out every next plot point well before it appeared.

I felt transported to a special part of Paris and became acquainted with its residents. I didn't want to leave the party. I also didn't expect to enjoy the book as much as I did. It's bittersweet when a book is so good that you don't want it to end, but you know it must. That was my experience with The Only Street in Paris.

I'm not a fan of magic, but I fully trust Ann Patchett to tell a good story and she doesn't disappoint in The Magician's Assistant. The story offers a sublime view of the imperfection of humans in a world where society still expects perfection and conformity. The book was published in the 1990s and so many things have changed that it was sometimes difficult to understand some of the characters' actions, but the story itself has a timeless quality when it comes to the ideas like being helpless to love. Highly recommended to listeners who enjoy a story that itself doesn't completely conform to plot expectations.

A heartfelt history of the Motor City

A dense history of a slice of Detroit's history, Once in a Great City covers late 1962 through mid 1964. The good, the bad and the ugly gets thorough coverage - sometimes too thorough as names and places rapidly pass by. Many sections leave you wondering what is pertinent and what is local color.

Maraniss obviously loves his topic, but his reading leaves something to be desired. Expressing very little emotion, I often found my attention wandering because of Maraniss's monotone.

But I'm a Michigan native so the book was extremely relevant to me. I loved getting a detailed picture of that time in Detroit's history.
