Historia
An immediate sensation when it was first published in two volumes in 1945, Popper's monumental achievement has attained legendary status on both the Left and Right and is credited with inspiring anticommunist dissidents during the Cold War. Arguing that the spirit of free, critical inquiry that governs scientific investigation should also apply to politics, Popper traces the roots of an opposite, authoritarian tendency to a tradition represented by Plato, Marx, and Hegel.

Popper's magnum opus has unfortunately become as relevant today as it ever was. this genealogy of totalitarian thought is worth the read for all of us worried about Western Civilization's increasing authoritarianism and it's securitatian political grammar.

Historia
We are living in an age of conspiracy theories, whether it's an enduring, widely held belief such as government involvement in the Kennedy assassination, fears of a powerful infiltrating group, or modern fringe movements of varying popularity such as birtherism and trutherism. What is it in American culture that makes conspiracy theories proliferate? Who is targeted, and why? Are we in the heyday of the conspiracy theory, or is it in decline? American Conspiracy Theories is the first to use broad, long-term empirical data to analyze this popular American tendency.

Historia
Veteran script consultant Jill Chamberlain discovered in her work that an astounding 99 percent of first-time screenwriters don't know how to tell a story. What the 99 percent do instead is present a situation. In order to explain the difference, Chamberlain created the nutshell technique, a method whereby writers identify eight dynamic, interconnected elements that are required to successfully tell a story. Now, for the first time, Chamberlain presents her unique method in audiobook form with The Nutshell Technique: Crack the Secret of Successful Screenwriting.

Revisado: 04-21-22
Chamberlain has a great theory. it's limited scope leaves quite a bit to be desired, but it's quite powerful. I think Northrop Frye and Solon Simmons have a more thorough take--both divide story structure into four forms rather than two--but they are also writing academic books, and for a distinct audience. as a craft book that is limited in scope, The Nutshell Technique is great.

The Force of Nonviolence

Historia
Considering nonviolence as an ethical problem within a political philosophy requires a critique of individualism as well as an understanding of the psychosocial dimensions of violence. Butler draws upon Foucault, Fanon, Freud, and Benjamin to consider how the interdiction against violence fails to include lives regarded as ungrievable. By considering how "racial phantasms" inform justifications of state and administrative violence, Butler tracks how violence is often attributed to those who are most severely exposed to its lethal effects.

Butler and Brilliance
Revisado: 10-26-21
Judith Butler demands a readership by the mere quality of their work. Butler reminds us that "violence" and "nonviolence" can only debated through moral frameworks that present us pre-packaged definitions of these terms. They then propose a definition of their own, rooted in an egalitarian imaginary--one that argues for an equal distribution of grievability. When grievability is distributed equally, legalistic and individualistic notions of self-defense become incoherent as they presuppose a dependent "I." Selves are only ever interdependent, and must include the self to be defended as well as the self to be defended against. This work contains powerful arguments for militant pacifism as a political force. What "we" must do now is put such pacifism into practice.

Historia
Alfa Ndiaye is a Senegalese man who, never before having left his village, finds himself fighting as a so-called “Chocolat” soldier with the French army during World War I. When his friend Mademba Diop, in the same regiment, is seriously injured in battle, Diop begs Alfa to kill him and spare him the pain of a long and agonizing death in No Man’s Land. Unable to commit this mercy killing, madness creeps into Alfa’s mind as he comes to see this refusal as a cruel moment of cowardice.

Brilliant and Horrific
Revisado: 09-02-21
Diop's second novel is beautiful and ugly, horrible and wonderful. It is a brief afternoon that will haunt you for a month. This slow decent into madness is a fantastic illustration of the dynamic reality of human nature, the inhumanity of war, and the corruption of laws that bring us there. It touches on issues of trauma, cognitive instability, colonialism, rape, war, brotherhood, tradition, and an array of topics I probably missed. It is a must read for those willing to step into the shadow of our fallible nature.

Historia
Knowing how to transform conflict is critical in both our personal and professional lives. Yet, by and large, we are terrible at it. The reason, says longtime mediator Chad Ford, is fear. When conflict comes, our instincts are to run or fight. To transform conflict, Ford says we need to turn toward the people we are in conflict with, put down our physical and emotional weapons, and really love them with the kind of love that leads us to treat others as fellow human beings, not as objects in our way.

Historia
This collection of 11 wide-ranging lectures which appeared originally in 1933, was based on lectures previously given when Jung was in the process of absorbing a considerable period of study of Eastern religions, Gnosticism and other religious sources. It was a time, according to the translator Cary F. Baynes, ‘when the Western world stands on the verge of a spiritual rebirth...after a long period of outward expansion, we are beginning to look inside ourselves once more.’

Earth and its society have been changed irrevocably in the aftermath of Ender Wiggin's victory over the Formics. The unity forced upon the warring nations by an alien enemy has shattered. Nations are rising again, seeking territory and influence, and most of all, seeking to control the skills and loyalty of the children from the Battle School. But one person has a better idea. Peter Wiggin, Ender's older, more ruthless, brother, sees that any hope for the future of Earth lies in restoring a sense of unity and purpose. And he has an irresistible call on the loyalty of Earth's young warriors.
