Historia
In Music as a Mirror of History, Great Courses favorite Professor Greenberg of San Francisco Performances returns with a fascinating and provocative premise: Despite the abstractness and the universality of music - and our habit of listening to it divorced from any historical context - music is a mirror of the historical setting in which it was created. Music carries a rich spectrum of social, cultural, historical, and philosophical information, all grounded in the life and experience of the composer.

This was Fabulous!
Revisado: 04-28-22
I wasn't sure how I'd like this when I started listening, but shortly after I started listening, I was hooked! The author/lecturer did a fantastic job on this! I loved finding out the backstories of many pieces, and how current events of the day really affected the. composers. This reminds me of Masterworks class in college, except more interesting.
The author/lecturer/narrator was so animated when he was reading a diary that showed extreme emotion from the composers. He made it extra interesting with that.
I'm so glad I gave this series a try. it's. totally worth it! Many Thanks!

Historia
In the summer of 1937, a California crime stunned an already grim nation. Three little girls were lured away from a neighborhood park to unthinkable deaths. After a frantic week-long manhunt for the killer, a suspect emerged. Justice was swift, and the condemned man was buried away with the horrifying story. But decades later, Pamela Everett, a lawyer and former journalist, starts digging, following up a cryptic comment her father once made about losing two of his sisters. Everett unearths a truly historic legal case that included the genesis of modern sex offender laws and the last man sentenced to hang in California.

Horrific Crime & Possibly Wrong Man Hung for it.
Revisado: 04-13-22
This was such a riveting story! Such a terrible, unthinkable crime back when life was supposed to have been more simple. The author digs deep and finds much more detail regarding the man convicted & hung for the crime he may have not committed. The author does a very thorough job of finding out more information that seemed to be unnoticed at the time. A very well written and narrated story. I couldn't put it down!

The story of NASCAR's legendary racer - newly revised Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s name virtually assured that his life would not be ordinary. Over the past decade, he has fulfilled that destiny. His father, one of the most successful drivers in the history of international motorsports, gave his son more than his name. Dale Earnhardt Sr. placed Dale Jr. in position to follow the footsteps and tire tracks he had left from Darlington to Daytona, from coast to coast, from one championship to the next.

Historia
A Boy Named Phyllis is Frank DeCaro's witty gem of a memoir about growing up among working-class Italian folk in Little Falls, New Jersey. There are the usual trials and tribulations between little Frankie and his parents, Marian and Frank Sr., but this is no angst-ridden, coming-of-age gay memoir. Frank is funny, and A Boy Names Phyllis is the antidote to such books.

A Fabulous Memoir of Growing Up Gay
Revisado: 03-14-22
I wasn't sure if I'd like this, but figured I'd give it a try. I loved it! The author's narration was awesome. He did a fantastic job and yes, a spot on imitation of Paul Lynde. The energy in his narration added so much to this already well written book. Despite being treated by kids in grade school, he finally found his niche and hasn't looked back. Great Job. Thank you !

A Very Necessary Book for Insight on Depression
Revisado: 03-13-22
This was hard to listen to, because I've had to deal with regular chronic depression for almost 37 years, & I have a close cousin who has bi-polar/manic. Fortunately, she stays on her meds & is helped, but every so often its effectiveness diminishes & she has to suffer through weaning off of that, then slowly taking a new one. Sometimes the replacement is no good. She suffers a lot. We're very close & are I'm contact nearly every day..
Reading this emphasizes my concern for her and others I've known. I know that just letting her know I'm always here for her - 24/7& that I love her gives her a bit of comfort. Hoping the new med will actually work for her.
Going through this is torture for everyone. It took a lot of guts to write this out for others to hopefully learn about. I'm so glad the author did.
It is well written & narrated. I also hope that writing this book was able to help the author even a bit. Depression is not a secretive thing. sufferers can't act like it's a cold & blindly dismiss it. I hope this book helps many people. Thank you.

Historia
On January 17, 1913, alone and near starvation, Douglas Mawson, leader of the Australasian Antarctic Expedition, was hauling a sledge to get back to base camp - the dogs were gone. Mawson plunged through a snow bridge, dangling over an abyss by the sledge harness. A line of poetry gave him the will to haul himself back to the surface. On February 8, when he staggered back to base, his features unrecognizable, the first teammate to reach him blurted out, "Which one are you?"

A Sadly Unknown Explorer's Story of Endurance
Revisado: 03-12-22
This person, these mostly unknown heroic explorers, went through the worst in their efforts to further explore the Antarctic. The book was written very well. A lot of detail helps paint the picture of some of their adventures. It's a tragedy that they didn't get the acclaim that Shackleton and others did. I'm glad this book was written to let those interested know about such brave men.

Patrimony, a true story, touches the emotions as strongly as anything Philip Roth has ever written. Roth watches as his 86-year-old father - famous for his vigor, his charm, and his repertoire of Newark recollections - battles with the brain tumor that will kill him. The son, full of love, anxiety, and dread, accompanies his father through each fearful stage of his final ordeal, and, as he does so, discloses the survivalist tenacity that has distinguished his father's long, stubborn engagement with life.

Good Memoir, Special Last Times with His Dad
Revisado: 03-10-22
This was very interesting. It was written very well & had excellent narration. Listening to the author dealing with his elderly father. . I couldn't help but think of my own parents, who have been gone & very much missed. The Author seemed to make the best of the time he had left with his dad. I hope the good memories are stronger than the bad. Very thoughtfully written. Thank you.

Gable's rise to idol stature was swift. He made close to one hundred films in his lifetime and achieved immortalization in the timeless epic, Gone with the Wind. Off-screen, the man who finally won the indomitable Scarlett O’Hara was even more of a lady’s man than his character. He seduced, and, in several cases, married women of immense wealth to sustain his extravagant lifestyle and further his career.

Sad Life for Such a Troubled Person
Revisado: 03-06-22
This was a really good book. It was well written and narrated. Her life had so much sadness in it. and to not know really WHY some things were so bad just added to her suffering.
I didn't really know much about her, but this book seemed to be quite thorough. It was easy to listen to, for me. Very good job.
