Bright On Buddhism - Buddhish Episode 6 - Hello and welcome to a different kind of episode of Bright on Buddhism called "Buddhish"! These episodes are unscripted, untimed, and unedited. Note that we're speaking less formally here and explicit language used. Listener discretion advised! Today, we are discussing the assassination of Japanese Former PM Shinzo Abe. This is a shocking historical event that has rocked Japan and its allies, and we are here to discuss some of what is known about the assassination, what it means for Japanese politics and society, and who Shinzo Abe was. As this is some...

what does this have to do with Buddhism?
Revisado: 10-22-24
we can discuss gun rights and violence and laws and legal philosophy and difference between a heterogeneous society like US with a huge semi-permeable border and large criminal organizations south of it vs. Japan. we can also discuss Japanese vs American legal landscape in general.
but what does this have to do with Abe or Buddhism? it seems like the author just decided to use his Buddhist platform to share his leftist views.

I still think Buddhism is nihilist
Revisado: 09-19-24
I'm not a colonialist trying "to take natives' resources", but I independently came to all these conclusions about Buddhism. I hope I'm wrong. I like Zen. But I still feel like it's nihilist. There is no "positive" soteriological or teleological purpose to existence.

Non-sequitur
Revisado: 07-19-24
It sounds like wishful thinking. I don't like it that bad things happening to me are blamed on choices my previous version made, so it must be wrong. Saying that the Universe is just random is much better.

Historia
In this iconoclastic and provocative work, leading scholars Israel Finkelstein and Neil Asher Silberman draw on recent archaeological research to present a dramatically revised portrait of ancient Israel and its neighbors. They argue that crucial evidence (or a telling lack of evidence) at digs in Israel, Egypt, Jordan, and Lebanon suggests that many of the most famous stories in the Bible - the wanderings of the patriarchs, the Exodus from Egypt, Joshua’s conquest of Canaan, and David and Solomon’s vast empire - reflect the world of the later authors.

Great work of scholarship with mediocre reading
Revisado: 06-25-24
The scholarship in the book is amazing and speak for itself. Listen to get the modern view of Biblical scholarship.
The reading is nothing to write home about. The tone is dry and boring. More importantly, every foreign word is mispronounced. Well, I should say every Hebrew personal and place name. The one French name I heard is not only pronounced correctly, but also with French accent. Pronunciation is so monstrous as to be racist: the reader clearly put zero effort into learning how to pronounce a handful of personal names related to the main subject. The negligence is so glaring as almost to seem intentional. This book should be re-recorded with a more deligent and possibly less racist voice actor.

Historia
China has been a wellspring of storytelling for over 2,000 years. Sadly, this fantastic literature is little known in the west outside the halls of academia, though a handful of recent 20th century authors have attained a respectable following. The stories in this volume date from the sixth century A.D. to the early part of the 20th century, and will give the listener a good feel for the subject. Astonishingly, the Chinese enjoyed from the earliest times many of the genres we take for granted today.

very depressing
Revisado: 06-06-17
every story is incredibly depressing with little else to offer besides melancholic drama. there is some period immersion, but mostly the author is seemed to be engaged in self-indulging depression.
