Historia
After their parents divorced in the 1970s, Andre Dubus III and his three siblings grew up with their exhausted working mother in a depressed Massachusetts mill town saturated with drugs and crime. To protect himself and those he loved from street violence, Andre learned to use his fists so well that he was even scared of himself. He was on a fast track to getting killed—or killing someone else—or to beatings-for-pay as a boxer.

Historia
It was 23 months after his accident, and Peter was still dealing with constant excruciating pain. He'd seen dozens of doctors and tried a myriad of medications, but nothing seemed to work. Faced with the impossible choice of suffering through the rest of his life, he had an unlikely epiphany, "If I could somehow hike 2,000 miles on the Appalachian Trail, then my leg will have to be better." He set a starting date three weeks out, cobbled together a novice's pack, and set off on a journey destined to change his life forever—though not exactly how he had envisioned it.

Loved this thru-hiker inviting us along
Revisado: 01-18-24
We are along for the ride, or walk. I loved getting to know the backstory, to understand WHY Peter was hiking the AT. And to learn right along side Peter as he evolved as a hiker. The interesting angle is his pre-hike injury. I was compelled to keep listening to see if he made it to Mt. Katahdin, did it cure his leg, make it worse?
His earnestness, sincerity, authenticity are why I was able to (and wanted to) overlook the many mispronounced words that weren’t edited out of the narration…that I suspect were just due to misspeaking rather than his unknowing of how to pronounce them. And because this is more a book written by a thru-hiker than a career author and narrator telling a story I was able to forgive it.
What a legacy to leave his family. This man has grit. Thank you for sharing your story!

Historia
Mountain search-and-rescue volunteer Bree Loewen's to-do list isn't quite the same as most people's. A former Mount Rainier climbing ranger and trained leader in mountain search-and-rescue, Bree shares the drama and the camaraderie of this work, as well as the challenges of trying to fit her other roles as wife and mother into what is still largely a masculine environment. In a fearless voice - disarming yet laced with dark humor - Bree guides us through intense recoveries, vivid wilderness landscapes, and the warmth she discovers in motherhood, community, and purpose.

Love rescue stories told by rescuers
Revisado: 01-16-24
Other than her kind of always passively complaining about her husband it was really good! Each rescue is different. She shares back story when she can. We get to know her and her seemingly obvious insecurities about not ever having an actual career. Side note; I wish we all had the same passion and expertise at something like Bree Loewen does and that we didn’t have to work (or did) and could also pursue what really makes our hearts full. She is a role model in that way for sure. Great narrator.

I hope it’s not the last in the series

I really liked it! I live long audiobooks. Richly layered characters, which started in book one. Mostly believable.

Another twisty turny book with great narration
Revisado: 06-04-23
I love that Anni Taylor’s books are long. Have twists until the end. Have no sex scenes and are light on cuss words. This narrator is skilled at different voice inflections and tones so that it is easy to tell the multiple characters apart.

Kept me guessing and narrator is great!
Revisado: 06-02-23
I love long audiobooks. The first two minutes captivated me. Lots of good twists and turns. The narrator does a great job of differentiating her voice for multiple characters. It was very easy to keep them all separate. I hated for the book to end. Will not be my last book authored or narrated by these two.

Should have hired a narrarator
Revisado: 07-23-21
I don’t know why people insist on narrating themselves when that is not their skill set. Reading is not nearly the same as narrating. In her voice is not very pleasant. The story itself is wonderful though.

Historia
On a clear May afternoon at the end of his junior year at Harvard, Howard Axelrod played a pick-up game of basketball. In a skirmish for a loose ball, a boy's finger hooked behind Axelrod's eyeball and left him permanently blinded in his right eye. A week later, he returned to the same dorm room, but to a different world. A world where nothing looked solid, where the distance between how people saw him and how he saw had widened into a gulf.

Interesting story but I couldn’t get into it because there’s a difference between reading a manuscript and performing an audiobook. This was very monotone and quite boring to listen to.
