Resonates today
Revisado: 09-01-24
Great collection of essays. It's amazing how many of these ideas linger today in slightly different forms. I even liked the wonky antitrust essay, which is great reading if you ever studied anything about antitrust. It really gives good context for current debates about "Big Tech." The essay at the end about Coin's School was fascinating for both it's explanation of the Free Silver movement and again how the characters we see today existed in the American past (although no one is advocating the free coinage of silver).

A Heavy Tome
Revisado: 08-03-24
Interesting but fairly dense. This is a pretty academic work. Wood's later works (e g., Radicalism of the American Revolution, Power and Liberty, Empire of Liberty) cover similar material but are more accessible. I will say a "dense" work from Wood is better than some "popular" works by other authors. The audiobook performer was excellent.

Historia
They have names like Barmy Bernie, Daft Donald, and Steamin' Sammy. They like lager (in huge quantities), the queen, football clubs (especially Manchester United), and themselves. Their dislike encompasses the rest of the known universe, and England's soccer thugs express it in ways that range from mere vandalism to riots that terrorize entire cities. Now, Bill Buford, editor of the prestigious journal Granta, enters this alternate society and records both its savageries and its sinister allure.

Americans revere their Constitution. However, most of us are unaware how tumultuous and improbable the drafting and ratification processes were. As Benjamin Franklin keenly observed, any assembly of men bring with them "all their prejudices, their passions, their errors of opinion, their local interests and their selfish views." One need not deny that the Framers had good intentions in order to believe that they also had interests.

Extremely thoughtful survey of the Constitution and Ratification
Revisado: 03-30-24
This book is excellent, but it is not for the faint of heart. It is extremely detailed and thorough. I love that it mostly used the framers' of the constitution's own word. it provides a very detailed explanation of the origin of the Constitution, what motivated the people in Philadelphia in 1787, and the course of the subsequent ratification of the Constitution. it also provides a good explanation of the Bill of Rights. this really essential reading for anyone who wants to understand the origin of the Constitution and why it is the way it is. I appreciated the conclusion which provides a tie to the problems we are experiencing today and how they have some origins and provisions that might not have totally been thought out in Philadelphia in 1787. All in all really great book with excellent narration.

Well written but a bit superficial
Revisado: 03-09-24
The book is well written and easy to follow but not a lot of depth or insight. As others have noted, there are some errors, but overall fine.

Historia
Trade disputes are usually understood as conflicts between countries with competing national interests, but as Matthew C. Klein and Michael Pettis show in this book, they are often the unexpected result of domestic political choices to serve the interests of the rich at the expense of workers and ordinary retirees. Klein and Pettis trace the origins of today's trade wars to decisions made by politicians and business leaders in China, Europe, and the United States over the past 30 years.

Very well done
Revisado: 02-03-24
This book does an excellent job convering difficult material. The book is extremely well organized and pleasure to listen to. The thesis is clear, presented at the beginning of the book, and followed through to the end with actual suggestions on how to make the world a better place. The book avoids the normal pitfalls of these type of books. It avoids the endless blow by blow accounts of world financial history that seem to revel in recounting the minutia of every global event. It also avoids the extreme superficial accounts containing some books that breeze at 100,000 ft over the landscape. Instead, it presented good detail where it was needed and moved quickly over areas that were not essential to what it was discussing It was also nice that they didn't just throw up their hands at the end of the book and seemed resigned to everything going to crap. Instead, they presented some solutions, although they may be difficult solutions to implement, but at least they were some solutions. Overall, a great book and an essential read to understand what is happening in the world today, especially if in the United States and Europe and China.

well organized and magisterial
Revisado: 01-13-24
this book is extremely well organized and well written. there are many beautiful turns of phrases and The narrative drives along like a freight train. is not too fast, but you do feel the inexorable push towards his conclusion. unlike a lot of these kind of high-level histories, there is enough detail, but it doesn't get bogged down in extremely abstract ideas. ideas. he does an absolute masterful job. the narration is also enjoyable to listen to. Great book.

Historia
Disorder: Hard Times in the 21st Century is a long history of this present political moment. It recounts three histories—one about geopolitics, one about the world economy, and one about western democracies—and explains how in the years of political disorder prior to the pandemic, the disruption in each became one big story. It shows how much of this turbulence originated in problems generated by fossil-fuel energies, and it explains why, as the green transition takes place, the longstanding predicaments energy invariably shapes will remain in place.

Disordered
Revisado: 01-02-24
Some interesting facts and thoughts, but the book's disorganized structure really took away from whatever was gained. Events were described and then redescribed multiple times, and the discussion jumped forward and back in time in a confusing way. There was also too much rehashing of the blow by blow recent political and financial events without much analysis connected to all the detail. I thought the narrator did a fine job with the dry material.
