An excellent reading of a classic mystery. It is no wonder so many movies have been made from this authors works.

H. Beam Piper wrote these stories in the late 1940s and they hold up remarkably well. If you are interested in stories concerning parallel universes, you will love these stories. It also serves as a introduction to Piper's Terran-Human Empire series.

I read this book when it first came out in the 70s. While I did remember a few piece’s of it, it was interesting to see how little of it I had retained. The story was a good/short space opera. Highly recommended.

From the Terra- Human Empire series. HBP had a complete future history of mankind mapped out and had begun to fill it in before his death.

This story is set on a planet with only 4 days in a solar year, hence the title. It has the usual Piper serving of human conflict with the environment and with other humans. If you liked “Little Fuzzy” you will like this story.

I was familiar with Edgar Wallace’s work only from the German Krimi films of the 60’s. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the writing. Wallace had a reputation of grinding out his novels quickly. This was quite entertaining and well read by the narrator.

This book clears up a lot of the questions generated by ‘Dust’. I’m looking forward to complete resolution in the final book.

Fun character in interesting stories set in the Napoleonic Wars. Reminds me of why I love the Holmes stories.

The science in this story is not very good. Mars goes into retrograde when Earth is near its closest. So why the communication problems? Another example is that a Hohmann orbit, is called a ‘Hofmann’ orbit.

Further, the story is written in first person and follows a very annoying and slow to catch on individual. No real problem solving, just reacting an whining.

If hard SF this is not for you.

An interesting book not entirely realistic, but definitely a peak into public opinion in 1930. World War I is blamed on arms merchants and disarmament is considered to be a cure. Within a decade they would all be fighting another war partially brought about by these attitudes.

This story is clearly the result of the 50s fear of both nuclear war and autocratic regimes. Both humans and the ETs have had a bad history in this regard. A small band of scientists takes off to the stars to find a different life but find the same old problems on a new world.
