Historia
In his groundbreaking best seller The Gift of Fear, Gavin de Becker showed millions of readers that, like every creature on earth, human beings can predict violent behavior. Now, in this exclusive audio presentation of Protecting the Gift, de Becker empowers parents to fully trust their own intuition when it comes to their children's safety. In this indispensable resource, de Becker provides keen insights into the behavior and strategies of predators. He offers practical new steps to enhance children's safety at every age level: specific questions parents can ask to effectively screen and evaluate babysitters, daycare services, schools, and doctors; a "Test of 12" safety skills children need before being alone in public; warning signs to help parents protect children from sexual abuse; and how to keep teenage girls and boys from unsafe situations with peers and adults. De Becker also shatters the myth that rules like "Never talk to strangers" will keep your children safe. By showing what danger really looks like - as opposed to what we might imagine it looks like - de Becker gives parents freedom from many common worries and unwarranted fears.

The information he offers in the book is worth the listen even though the audio isn’t so great.

Historia
In this fascinating narrative, therapist Catherine Gildiner presents five of what she calls her most heroic and memorable patients. Among them: A successful, first-generation Chinese immigrant musician suffering sexual dysfunction; a young woman whose father abandoned her at age nine with her younger siblings in an isolated cottage in the depth of winter; and a glamorous workaholic whose narcissistic, negligent mother greeted her each morning of her childhood with "Good morning, Monster". Each patient presents a mystery, one that will only be unpacked over years.

Great writing and narration
Revisado: 03-29-22
Beautifully written and the narrator did a great job distinguishing the different characters in the book. I saw another review that said the voice that the narrator did for the Chinese patient, Peter, was offensive. I thought she did a great job. She wasn’t trying to imitate a Chinese accent. She was imitating someone who was hardly spoken to until the age of 5.
I wish I could find more audiobooks out there of this quality!

Historia
Despite all her best efforts to break the cycle of catastrophic, destructive patterns of mental illness, Anna Berry found herself at the end of her rope - unemployed, penniless, homeless, and in the throes of a psychotic episode that threatened to destroy her life. Alone and unwell, she manages to find her grip on life, seeks the help she needs, and embarks on a life and career that illustrate that mental illness does not have to be ruinous.

What did I just listen to?
Revisado: 03-15-22
I knew when she started talking about how proud she was that she has never taken medication and that she doesn’t hear voices, that I was going to regret the credit I used to buy this book. I’ve never read a mental illness memoir where someone talks about why they’re better than the other crazy people.

Historia
Richard Wright's powerful and eloquent memoir of his journey from innocence to experience in the Jim Crow South. At once an unashamed confession and a profound indictment, Black Boy is a poignant record of struggle and endurance - a seminal literary work that illuminates our own time. The once controversial, now classic American autobiography measures the brutality and rawness of the Jim Crow South against the sheer desperate will it took to survive as a Black boy. Seventy-five years later, his words continue to reverberate.

Richard Wrights storytelling transcends time and culture
Revisado: 07-24-21
I had to read this book almost two decades ago in high school. I reluctant started reading and couldn’t put it down. Rereading it almost 20 years later, it’s just as good. He has a way of painting a mental picture with words that makes you really feel what he’s feeling. The narrator really does a great job of bringing the story to life too.
