Historia
Nobody knew where it came from. Nobody knew why it came. When an eight-foot-tall man made of stone appears in the middle of a busy city center one July afternoon, two-bit (and antisocial) reporter Andy Pointer assumes it's just a publicity stunt. Indeed, so does everyone else...until the Stone Man begins to walk, heading silently through the wall of the nearest building, flattening it, and killing several people inside as a result.

Interesting concept
Revisado: 12-22-15
The book has an interesting concept, and the narration is good. The characters aren't exactly bad either, although I did not really care about them. The problem was that they, and everyone else is unbelievably over-emotional. I was especially annoyed when a soldier apparently went into shock after seeing something that, yea, wouldn't have been pleasant, but far from the worst thing a soldier could expect to see, and far from the worst any kid sees every day on TV.
So I didn't really connect with the characters emotional responses; they all seemed out of proportion, even the guilt for not feeling enough guilt.
Still, it was an interesting story and I liked that things were left mysterious.

A giant of archaeology, Colin Renfrew has immeasurably improved our understanding of human history. In this passionately argued work, he offers a concise summary of prehistory - human existence that predates the development of written records - while challenging the very definition of prehistory itself.

Great academic literature
Revisado: 08-11-15
I was very happy to find this a properly academic text, and not just a work of popular science. Having listened to The Great Courses on similar subjects this was the perfect deeper level I was looking for. I am going to get this book in print as well, and might even use it in my PhD dissertation.

Not worth even the discount price
Revisado: 08-05-15
Would you try another book from Edward W. Robertson and/or Tim Gerard Reynolds?
No. Imagine how horrible the result would be if you yourself had tried your to write your own version of Robert Jordan-esqe fantasy when you were 14 years old. That's what this feels like. The narrator was OK, but the character portraits in this book was so shallow and cliché that I almost thought it a parody. After a few chapters when I realised that simply throwing the main character into the adventure without any clue as to his motivations, his personality or indeed any of his inner workings except immediate fear of getting killed and an inexplicable drive to learn magic - I turned it of in bewildered disgust.
Has The Cycle of Arawn turned you off from other books in this genre?
I have listened to a hundred books via audible and this is the first time I have written a full review. I just felt that I had to try and warn people.
There is good fantasy, and nowadays with people like GRRM and Sanderson there is no excuse for lack of character
Did Tim Gerard Reynolds do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?
The narrator was fine, its just that the characters were so two dimensional that he didn't have much to work with

Historia
Elantris was built on magic, and it thrived. But then the magic began to fade, and Elantris began to rot. Now its shattered citizens face domination by a powerful Imperium. Can a young Princess unite the people of Elantris and lead a rebellion against the imperial zealots? Brandon Sanderson's debut fantasy showed his skill as a storyteller and an imaginer of baroque magical systems to be fully developed from the start.

Very irritating reader
Revisado: 07-09-13
What made the experience of listening to Elantris the most enjoyable?
This is an excellent book as such, but sadly enough it takes quite some time to get over – not get used to – the readers ridiculous over-dramatization and unnecessarily long pauses. After a while I could successfully ignore this though, and focus on the story. It, fortunately is quite entertaining.

Historia
English magicians were once the wonder of the known world, with fairy servants at their beck and call; they could command winds, mountains, and woods. But by the early 1800s they have long since lost the ability to perform magic. They can only write long, dull papers about it, while fairy servants are nothing but a fading memory.

Enjoyable
Revisado: 07-09-13
What made the experience of listening to Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell the most enjoyable?
While I could say that this book was too slow at times, it wouldn’t really be fair to do so since it is quite conscious, and one of the great charms about it. This is very far from the fantasy or alternate-history that you might be used to, and I believe it will go down well with those that read those kinds of books less for the action, and more for the thought-provokingness that such milieus can provide. The reading was also quite excellent.
