While I found The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes interesting. And enjoyed it for what it was, I didn't love it. I cannot say the same about Sunrise on the Reaping.

It was fantastic. Probably as good as the original Hunger Games, which blew me away. I don't know whether Suzanne Collins had Haymitch's backstory so drawn out in her mind when writing the first book or whether she was just incredibly adept at plucking things from the original trilogy and finding ways to explain them. But it was SO well done.

Some of the fan service went a bit overboard, in my opinion. It was just too convenient at times and detracted from the story a bit but not enough to deduct any points.

Jefferson White's narration didn't enthrall me at first but over the course of the book, I grew to love it. He was very believable as Haymitch. And his intonation changes for other characters was great. I particularly enjoyed his Plutarch.

Now I want to go back to the original trilogy and re-read it just to see what other "trinkets" I may have missed.

This story was very engaging and well-told by the author, JD Vance. Parts were a bit beyond belief. But that happens. What I don't understand is how the person who wrote this book ended up who he is now.

Despite being a middle-aged male and totally not who his books are written for, I truly enjoy John Green ... usually. This one missed the mark with me.

The protagonist, Aza, has basically no redeemable qualities. I'm sure Green portrayed her that way to highlight her illness. But she's just so unlikeable.

Also, the ending sucked.

I've seen a lot of reviews say the narrator was boring but I honestly feel she portrayed the characters as they were. And I found her ability to give distinct voices to the characters -- especially the male ones -- quite impressive.

I truly enjoy Andy Weir and this was a fun listen. A little short if you have to spend a credit on it but I was lucky that it was part of Audible Plus.

The topic and writing were both intriguing. But I felt the story got bogged down at times. I didn't realize til the very end that it was written in 1959. I just assumed it was a period piece. Bronson Pinchot is an amazing voice actor. I'll continue to seek out books he narrates.

Reading through the reviews, I was convinced that there must have been a campaign to write negative reviews. So many people complaining about foul language, the story jumping around or not being funny.

Sure, there were some F bombs. But it was hardly overwhelming. Yes, the story jumped around. That's how stories are often told. And are you really going to complain that the tragedies that Trevor Noah lived through weren't funny enough for you?

But I notice that overall, the book has a 4.9 rating. It's just that (for me at least) 20 of the first 25 reviews were negative. (why is that?)

I, personally found the story compelling, entertaining, (at times) hilarious, (at times) gut wrenching and (often) educational. I honestly learned more about apartheid from this book than I previously knew.

Trevor Noah is a great storyteller. And if you aren't looking for a G-rated stand-up routine, I'd think you'll love it, too.

Listening to this book, you can tell that it was an anthology that was later stitched together. But Hersey did a good job of it. I especially liked the later stories from the six subjects.

Guidall's narration was excellent. As someone who narrates for a living, I truly appreciated his ability to go from Japanese to German to English without making anything seem out of place.

Another reviewer said something to the effect of not being able to relate to the main character and I thought that was a strange thing to say. But when I started to listen, I got it.

Tender Branson lacks charisma, morals, and anything else that might make him a decent human being. Not only could I not relate, I don't think ANYONE could relate. He just didn't feel like a person who could really exist.

The WRITING was good. Chuck Palahniuk can definitely turn a phrase. And his pacing, as always, was great. But the story itself just left me wanting to stop. I did finish it, reluctantly. And I wish I had both my time and money back. But, hey, they can't all be great, right?

Just as "common sense" and "common decency" are rare, so are the things referred to in this book. I forced myself to listen to about 90 minutes worth. Had to stop.

Prebble's narration is amazing ...

Having read 1984 before, it was nice to be able to compare and contrast the narrator's inflections and voices with what I already had in my head. The book is amazing, of course, and should be compulsory reading for everyone. It would be a crime crime not to read it at least once. (crime crime is not a typo)

But what struck me the most was Prebble's performance. To say "narration" doesn't do it justice. It's hard to believe that he gave each character not only their own voice but somehow injected that voice with its own character. Double plus good.
