Like potato chips-but meatier!
Revisado: 05-14-24
Obvious Classic genre and story outline not withstanding, Dennis E Taylor‘s thoughtfulness and playfulness are lovely entertainment.
Skillfully crafted, this is a perfect young adult-level novel. Potato chips-salty! tasty! tons of fun!
Road Kill is an excellent YA platform for considering the nature, creation and use of fake news. Meaty and nutritious!
Another feature that makes this an excellent YA candidate includes the comic relief character, Patrick. Although clichéd, his smart alek banter with every one is the coping mechanism used to deal with the mind blowing experiences our no-longer-kids, not-quite-adults encounter.
The depth into which Mr. Taylor usually goes to examine a concept or explain scientific terms is not here, but as a YA novel, I can accept its absence.
This is a perfect scaffold for the next sci-fi fun ride movie. Good opportunity for creative effects to wow us with ships and aliens and gadgets! (Weta!!)
Great chase scenes, just a smattering of post high school angst and understanding but suffering parents, and best of all - - a gunfight!!!
My friends want me to hold up a sign when I’m being sarcastic. No sign this time, I’m happy to be totally serious.
RAY PORTER IS EVERYTHING!!!!!

She could never make small talk at a party—or even get invited to one. And she prefers the company of her books, her dog, Shadow, and the Fair Folk to other people. So when she arrives in the hardscrabble village of Hrafnsvik, Emily has no intention of befriending the gruff townsfolk.

Revisado: 03-14-24
I love the way, John Scalzi creates universes, and in this one you glean a strange, but interesting world. His quality storytelling, with a little bit of horror thrown in, is a treat.
However…
This was on sale for 11 and something dollars, and advertised as being three hours 15 minutes long.
It was actually only two hours and 45 minutes long, and for that, I regret my purchase.
Not cool, Audible. Not cool.

A comforting exploration of the next step of “…where no man has gone before.”
It’s a nerd’s happy place. I’ve listened to it three times now, and the first 4-5 chapters several times more.

Historia
Fourteen-year-old Mona isn't like the wizards charged with defending the city. She can't control lightning or speak to water. Her familiar is a sourdough starter, and her magic only works on bread. She has a comfortable life in her aunt's bakery making gingerbread men dance. But Mona's life is turned upside down when she finds a dead body on the bakery floor. An assassin is stalking the streets of Mona's city, preying on magic folk, and it appears that Mona is his next target. And in an embattled city suddenly bereft of wizards, the assassin may be the least of Mona's worries.

True crime novel form, with a laudable hero.
Revisado: 03-24-23
It is stunning how complicit evil can occupy a community.
Tom White was an extraordinary man.
Will Patton is an excellent narrator. There were a couple of times, however, where it was clear that he was reading from the page and came up short because he had to turn a corner in his inflections due to not comprehending the entire sentence ahead of time. That's actually a production fumble; the Director should have had him read those places over again, but figured it was "good enough." That's the only reason for taking away a star. I expect a lot when I'm listening to Will Patton.

Historia
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

A classic heroine
Revisado: 03-06-23
A gargantuan soul, persevering under a curse. She's breathtaking.
The dastardly villains are almost unbelievable. But, yes, they're real.
The ending is a little too Willy Wonka, but undeniably satisfying.
Well worth your time.

Historia
Chief medical examiner Kay Scarpetta is the reluctant star witness in a sensational murder trial when she receives shocking news. The judge’s sister has been found dead. At first glance, it appears to be a home invasion, but then why was nothing stolen, and why is the garden strewn with dead plants and insects? Although there is no apparent cause of death, Scarpetta recognizes telltale signs of the unthinkable, and she knows the worst is yet to come. The forensic pathologist finds herself pitted against a powerful force that returns her to the past.

Rather ho-hum
Revisado: 02-19-23
This was a long, torturous description of Kay Scarpetta's discomfort. And someone else described it well and they said that the book was padded with descriptions of people and situation's from previous installments. The solution to the murder isn't really a solution, and it's clear the murderer was an instrument for somebody else, yet to be discovered.
This small episode could have been better covered in half the time/half the pages.

Historia
It’s easy to be yourself when who and what you are is in vogue. But growing up Black and gay in America has never been easy. Before Billy Porter was slaying red carpets and giving an iconic performance in the celebrated TV show Pose; before he was the Tony Award-winning star of Broadway’s Kinky Boots; and before he was an acclaimed recording artist, actor, playwright, and all-around diva, Porter was a young boy who didn’t fit in.

More than I expected.
Revisado: 02-09-23
Given the consummate queen Billy Porter is, I was surprised and brought up short. This is not a scream-y, shout-y indulgence! No, no!
This memoir contains such depth and candor, that I now have an abiding respect for his integrity and bravery that matches the admiration I already had for his talent and hard work.
I. Want. More!
And I congratulate Mr. Porter on staying true to the healing path.

From his breakout role in Die Hard to his outstanding, multifaceted performances in the Harry Potter films, Galaxy Quest, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, and more, Alan Rickman cemented his legacy as a world-class actor. His air of dignity, his sonorous voice, and the knowing wit he brought to each role continue to captivate audiences today. But Rickman’s ability to breathe life into projects wasn't confined to just his performances.

A window on a life lived richly and well.
Revisado: 02-09-23
For those who loved and admired the man.
His talent and work, we get to see from the inside, but it was hardly all of him. His world was a web of friends and fellow creatives, people of influence, and politicians, travel, and a constant consideration and consumption of all the arts.
Love of food, wine, good conversation and fun was the vehicle for connection that made his and Rima's life so vibrant. His highest compliment was to consider a person open and curious. I was pleased to reflect with the man.
