As always, Tessa Gratton's character work shines like the sun through the pages of this book. They provide satisfying character archs for multiple favorite characters and even resurrected interest in some I had stopped caring about back in Phase 1. It does have a significant "second book in a trilogy" feel when it comes to story but these characters could be getting groceries and if Tessa Gratton is writing them, I'm reading it.

I almost DNF'ed this book within the first hour because I thought it was going to be some Anti-Vax nonsense but I'm really glad I heald on. What unfolds from there is a beautiful piece of speculative fiction about how humanity will respond to impending climate change in ways that are grim and hopeful.

I loved the split story setting as it not only provided fun "who's that" moments when a character was introduced but also showed how action now can resonate throughout the decades and no act is too small.

The reason I didn't give this a 5 out of 5 was the context of when it was released. I'm not some government shill but the decision to publish a book in 2022 where the badguys are using the tools of Healthcare to oppress people left me with that initial poor opinion. However, once context is established, I agreed with the use of such themes as it is not unreasonable to believe that, taken to the extreme, Triage Camps could exist within the next decade or two.

All in all I will be recommending this book to people who are looking for a enviro-centric read with very topical themes.

Much like Dewes' Divide series, Rubicon is am exciting and thought provoking romp through the questions of "What is it to be human?" and "What it is to be alive" in the shell of video game esque action set pieces.

Our protagonist Adrian Valero is a wonderful example of the dehumanizing haze that follows trauma and how coming back from that isn't as simple as letting love into your life.

The ending left me reconsidering the actions and motivations of each character as I am left wondering "Who was right?" at the finish.

As a big J.S. Dewes fan, Mass Effect fan and fan of transhumanist Sci-Fi in general, my 5 star review is fully deserved as Rubicon is one of the best novels I have read in quite a while. Here's hoping I don't re-zone before the sequel

The change in prose is noticeable, with the intention of course being that younger readers can follow. However, the themes and drama of the adult books are still present and the quality of performance and story is equivalent with other Phase 1 stories. Well worth the listen
