A beautiful tale of a population often overlooked. This immigrant tale evolves to evoke greater empathy from the reader, and is beautifully narrated. I cried twice at the end.

This book was lovely to listen to. The narrator did an excellent job, and the story itself was lovingly rendered so as to provide a realistic and hopeful glimpse of the future of humanity.

Without wanting to divulge the plot, there are themes from Jonathan, strange, and Mr. Norrell that reoccur in this book and are worth diving into. It is an act of faith to continue reading through the first 2/3 of the novel as your mind is continuously searching for the allegory or underlying plot. But it will come to you, Dear Reader, and you will be rewarded in the end.

I gave the story four stars, because I wanted to like it more than I ended up liking it. The historical detail in the description of the Cloisters in New York was exquisite. But I didn’t like any of the main characters and ultimately did not feel compelled to care about their fate, very well narrated.

I began this book on the heels of another book which I just loved. I was a little leery and worried that it’s somewhat Morose early chapter was a harbinger of an entirely Mahrous novel. However, it was A rollicking three kinds of tail in one. A conspiracy thriller, a murder mystery, and a damn good sci-fi yarn. Enjoy!

I am now disappointed that the book has ended. At first, the story seemed slow to begin and seemed to marched down a path that we have all seen in film and TV. Young naive immigrant girl gets in out of her depth and there is tragedy in the end. However, there are enough small differences between this story and those stories that even though there is sadness in the tale, the beautifully etched characters, the individual stories, and the treatment of the Voodoo faith are all so tender and honest that the time spent with Fabolous and her cousins is worth it.

If you have not yet read the Oxford time travel series, do so post haste. Although DON'T START WITH THIS ONE. Start with Doomsday Book, then read To Say Nothing of the Dog, then Blackout. This is the final book (to my knowledge) in the series. It is wonderful, detailed world building. Meticulously researched, funny, touching, and extraordinarily thorough. Highly recommended.

There are things in this book that would make my grandmother blush, to be sure, but it is also respectful and insightful. The humor punches up and the story moves at a great clip. Fun to imagine what Jesus' first thirty years were like.

This book is a fun summer read, and by fun, I mean 'fun', as the content is serious and dark. But also intriguing. The narration is excellent, and the plot thick. I very much enjoyed the story.
Also, great feminist inspiration here, even though it is fiction.

in addition to being flat-out funny this book also has a lot of lessons to teach personally. Especially if that person happens to be white. To be white in America is to have grown up without the difficulties of racism thrown constantly in your face. And that doesn't mean that this story is only about racism, it's also about sexism and homophobia. Worth the listen absolutely.
