While this book had a good premise, the protagonist, Jade, was so annoying that there is no way I could read any more of this series.

Pros:

At first I thought Samara Naeymi's voice for Jade was annoyingly chipper, but, as it turns out, the portrayal is spot on. So... nice job Samara.

Cons:

Everyone in this book absolutely ADORES Jade even though she is essentially a bully with an oversized ego and a sense of entitlement that is all too common in today's youth. She has no class, no manners and no sense of propriety. She doesn't even have the decency to bow or show any kind of respect when she meets the king and the royal family, yet everyone still just LOVES her.

As for the action in this book - there isn't any. Jade abhors violence and killing. That is, until she's attacked... Then she wants to hunt that particular creature into extinction! Could she be any more inconsistent?

The "Siphon" power in this story sounds like a cool idea. It is why I read this book. Unfortunately, it is poorly executed. Jade quickly becomes so power hungry that she almost kills herself on multiple occasions. She gains 50 (or so) skills in a matter of a couple of days, and masters every type of magic she comes in contact with no training or any kind of guide - completely self-taught! While I can handle over-powered characters, (they can even be quite fun when developed properly) there is nothing to really use her power on. That is, unless you count using water magic to dry herself off after a bath. Wow. Exciting.

All in all, a waste of a credit.

Great concept, but too much filler...

Any additional comments?

This first book is, by far, the best of the series. The next two books, however, should have been shortened and combined into one, as they were a bit too monotonous for me. If not for the top notch narration, I may have given up on this series. The story picks up again in the fourth book, though - so don't give up too soon! My 'star' ratings reflect the series as a whole.
