not my favorite

I enjoy a good memoir. this one lacks detail and insight into action. he did admit to treating German civilians, elderly women mostly, like garbage after victory, something i found very strange for a member of the 506 PIR

Historia
Growing up on a farm in Ohio, George always preferred being outdoors and exploring. This made school a challenge, but his hunting, fishing, and trapping skills helped put food on his family's table. As a poor teenager living in a rough area, he got into regular brawls, and he found holding down a job hard because of his wanderlust. After working out West with the CCC, he decided that joining the Marines offered him the opportunity for adventure plus three square meals a day; so he and his brother joined the Corps in 1941.

My first listen I was unsure so I listened again immediately. The 2nd time it became one of my favorites. I enjoy personal memoirs. The narrator is too soft spoken and doesn't understand military nomenclature, acronyms or diddies..

The celebrated 2010 HBO miniseries The Pacific, winner of eight Emmy Awards, was based on two classic books about the War in the Pacific, Helmet for My Pillow and With The Old Breed. Audible Studios, in partnership with Playtone, the production company co-owned by Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman, and creator of the award-winning HBO series Band of Brothers, John Adams, and The Pacific, as well as the HBO movie Game Change, has created new recordings of these memoirs, narrated by the stars of the miniseries.

read it many times, such a good writer
Revisado: 09-20-22
As I enjoy personal memoirs over historical, not only is Helmet an awesome 1st hand account, but Lucky is such a good writer. Would that we all lived our lives daily demonstrating attitude, character, courage and belief in the Constitution. Living daily remembering what that great generation accomplished to honor their memory and fidelity. Hoosier, Chuckler, Runner and Lucky.

I enjoy personal memoirs particularly. This was some memoir, some philosophy, some politics and some religion. No boot camp, or day to day voyage through the experience of war. It wasn't a terrible book. It's just different.

Historia
This celebrated classic gives a soldier's-eye-view of the Guadalcanal battles; crucial to World War II, the war that continues to fascinate us all. Unlike some of those on Guadalcanal in the fall of 1942, Richard Tregaskis volunteered to be there. One of only two on-location news correspondents, he lived alongside the soldiers: sleeping on the ground - only to be awoken by air raids - eating meager rations, and braving some of the most dangerous battlefields of World War II.

Historia
The story of the Battle of Saipan has it all. Marines at war: on Pacific beaches, in hellish volcanic landscapes in places like Purple Heart Ridge, Death Valley, and Hell's Pocket, under a commander known as "Howlin' Mad." Naval combat: carriers battling carriers from afar, fighters downing Japanese aircraft, submarines sinking carriers. Marine-army rivalry. Fanatical Japanese defense and resistance. A turning point of the Pacific War. James Hallas reconstructs the full panorama of Saipan in a way that no recent chronicler of the battle has done.

Drafted in 1942, Malarkey arrived at Toccoa Camp in Georgia and was one of six soldiers who earned their Eagle wings and went to England in 1943 to provide ground cover for the largest amphibious military attack in history: Operation Overlord.

strong and silent
Revisado: 06-06-22
Having read many of the Band of Brothers memoirs, this one is good, but not one of my favorites. I admit I liked his character in the mini-series, he was a tough Soldier. It still feels like I don't know much about him in his own words. After you listen/read maybe this will make more sense. He doesn't have the Paternal influence as Major Winters but still his memoir was inspiring and I do recommend it.
