Historia
What does it mean when the man who wrote the Declaration of Independence is your father and also your slave master? Beverly, Harriet, Madison, and Eston are Thomas Jefferson’s children, but their mother is a slave, so they must keep their father’s identity secret. They get special treatment - better work, better shoes, even violin lessons - but they are still slaves. Their father has promised to set them all free when each turns 21. Some of them are light-skinned enough that they will be able to enter white society - and thereby turn their backs on home forever.

Well done!

I loved everything about this book. Though it is in 3rd person, the switches in character perspectives invest the reader into the lives of various characters and their families. The historical facts are well researched and seamlessly weaved into and drive the fictional aspects of this book. Definitely worth everyone’s time.

Historia
In this award-winning Audible Studios production, Trevor Noah tells his wild coming-of-age tale during the twilight of apartheid in South Africa. It’s a story that begins with his mother throwing him from a moving van to save him from a potentially fatal dispute with gangsters, then follows the budding comedian’s path to self-discovery through episodes both poignant and comical.

Enlightening
Revisado: 08-31-17
I had heard an interview that Trevor Noah did on NPR. He was well-spoken and insightful, so I decided to download his book. I enjoy listening to and reading others' stories, and I'm always looking for material for my classroom. I thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of this book. The story is not chronological but ideas and events are seamlessly connected. I laughed out loud many times, and I was shocked when I looked up his age. He is a year younger than myself, so his story put some things into perspective. I am a firm believer that everyone should listen to and consider other perspectives, and Trevor Noah's, especially because you can hear the passion in his voice, is enlightening.

Historia
Why we think it’s a great listen: Some books are meant to be read; others are meant to be heard – Water for Elephants falls into the second group, and is one of the best examples we have of how a powerful performance enhances a great story. Nonagenarian Jacob Jankowski reflects back on his wild and wondrous days with a circus. It's the Depression Era and Jacob, finding himself parentless and penniless, joins the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth.

Love the old man Jacob
Revisado: 09-15-15
I enjoyed listening to this story on my way back and forth to work. All characters were intriguing but I loved the old man Jacob's thoughts and role in the story. I now need to watch the movie.

Historia
From 1999 to 2009, U.S. Navy SEAL Chris Kyle recorded the most career sniper kills in United States military history. The Pentagon has officially confirmed more than 150 of Kyles kills (the previous American record was 109), but it has declined to verify the astonishing total number for this book. Iraqi insurgents feared Kyle so much they named him al-Shaitan ("the devil") and placed a bounty on his head.

Intriguing and Enlightening
Revisado: 02-04-15
Would you listen to American Sniper again? Why?
I would listen to this again. I can appreciate his story-telling technique. He was not a writer and he didn't try to be. It was honest and sincere.
What was one of the most memorable moments of American Sniper?
I found myself having to turn it off at times on my way to work. He reflects often about things he will get to eventually, and it saddened me. I will say the moment that struck me the most was his moment of realization that he was not invincible.
Have you listened to any of John Pruden’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I have not listened to John Pruden before, but I would again.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
All of the above...I laughed and cried.
Any additional comments?
If nothing else, this autobiography gives you perspective. It allows to to get outside of your own head, put aside your own personal opinions of war and a soldiers role in it, and just appreciate someone else's sacrifices. Thank you Chris Kyle for teaching me something new and for your service.
