Best novel I’ve read this year, and its been a compelling list…
Revisado: 12-19-24
The characters are so finely drawn, the riff off the real is remarkable, and the hope it lays down is poignant.
I’m a swimmer, snorkeler, maker and reader - I was touched. I laughed out loud twice I found myself tearing at three times while reading this unbelievably strong book.

Historia
In Argus, North Dakota, a collection of people revolve around a fraught wedding. Gary Geist, a terrified young man set to inherit two farms, is desperate to marry Kismet Poe, an impulsive, lapsed Goth who can't read her future but seems to resolve his. Hugo, a gentle red-haired, home-schooled giant, is also in love with Kismet. He’s determined to steal her and is eager to be a home wrecker. Kismet's mother, Crystal, hauls sugar beets for Gary's family, and on her nightly runs, tunes into the darkness of late-night radio, sees visions of guardian angels.

wild ride, such a strong storyteller
Revisado: 11-02-24
I loved how different this was from everything else she’s written and yet this world snuggles up to all the rest. How is it that such serious issues and bright humor get woven up through the book - strands embedded within this large cast of characters? I’m simply a gushing, thankful fan.

Here is Cheryl, a tightly-wound, vulnerable woman who lives alone, with a perpetual lump in her throat. She is haunted by a baby boy she met when she was six, who sometimes recurs as other people's babies. Cheryl is also obsessed with Phillip, a philandering board member at the women's self-defense nonprofit where she works. She believes they've been making love for many lifetimes, though they have yet to consummate in this one.

simply awful
Revisado: 10-16-24
Enjoyed her latest, I laughed out loud during sections, and was reaching out for more. Very Sadly, I simply don't want to spend another minute in this icky world she's constructed. I usually finish what I start, but this is not the first bad book I've put down that's been written by a good woman. Wish I could return it!

The Barnes family is in trouble. Dickie’s once-lucrative car business is going under—but Dickie is spending his days in the woods, building an apocalypse-proof bunker with a renegade handyman. His wife, Imelda, is selling off her jewelry on eBay and half-heartedly dodging the attention of fast-talking cattle farmer Big Mike, while their teenage daughter, Cass, formerly top of her class, seems determined to binge drink her way through her final exams. As for twelve-year-old PJ, he’s on the brink of running away.

Wonderfully odd
Revisado: 01-08-24
Appreciated this singular work. Lovers of short stories and those that listen over long commutes might have kinder praise than those who predominantly read novels. It is a tangled flickering of human history, psychology, natural history, and botanical discription. It forms an intimate picture of a peopled landscape that feels familiar if you live in Western Massachusetts, as I do.
The narration is really fine.

The strangest most lovely thing I’ve encountered in awhile
Revisado: 08-31-23
I started crying when it was over.
Yeah, the tale’s end is poignant, but I realized I was crying because I wanted to stay in the world that had been created more than I was impacted by the ending. I didn’t want it to be the closing.
The performance was spot on. The reader and content seemed perfectly matched. I had the chance to wonder whether authors get to listen to hundreds of different voices as they determine who reads their work. Is the process like choosing the cover of their book? Was the selection of the reader a wonderful editorial choice, the author’s selected reader, a happy accident of late capitalism, an AI pairing? Would love to learn the answer…
The story is a tied-together poetic wonder, that at specific moments might initially feel to be a disjointed puzzle. But stay with it if you feel your loosing the thread - the narrative arc totally works. Real Kudos to all involved.

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Interesting collisions-but a wonderful read
Revisado: 06-06-23
Why do I feel as though this book is a strange collision — the best of ‘cozy mysteries’ meets young adult fiction with a naturalist’s bent? I’m somewhere between retirement age and well past most sagas about youth struggling to find themselves. Yet, I was really touched by this remarkably sweet novel.
I also appreciated specific passages — Van Pelt’practically physicalized the act of decision-making through a well-crafted description of navigating through traffic. Nice touch. I’ve already decided to read whatever comes next from this talented writer.

I finished everything, well almost everything - I didn’t finish this. Drivel. A too obvious, failed attempt to spin something dark, serious, deep.
