Historia
In this gripping biography, acclaimed author Harlow Giles Unger paints an intimate portrait of the heroic young French soldier who, at 19, renounced a life of luxury in Paris and Versailles to fight and bleed for liberty - at Brandywine, Valley Forge, and Yorktown. A major general in the Continental army, he quickly earned the love of his troops, his fellow commanders, and his commander in chief, George Washington, who called him his "adopted son".

The Greatest American Ever Born, was French
Revisado: 06-04-24
With over 24 years in service to the US, as a Marine and DoD civilian, this is the biography of the single greatest American and one of the most important proponents of liberty, self determination, and the rights of all men. I'm saddened and shocked I didn't fully understand or appreciate the impact of his life on the entire modern world. HIGHLY recommend everyone invest the time for this book.

Historia
Thomas Paine's The Age of Reason; Being an Investigation of True and Fabulous Theology, published in three parts from 1794, was a best seller in America, where it caused a short-lived deistic revival. Promoting a creator-God while advocating reason in the place of revelation, Paine’s controversial pamphlet caused his native British audience, fearing the results of the French Revolution, to receive it with more hostility than their American counterparts.

I just can't believe this man's brain, to be so intelligent and thorough in his work and precise in his words. However, I can see why he was kicked out of England and France...my new hero. A contrarian among contrarians.

George Orwell depicts a gray, totalitarian world dominated by Big Brother and its vast network of agents, including the Thought Police - a world in which news is manufactured according to the authorities' will and people live tepid lives by rote. Winston Smith, a hero with no heroic qualities, longs only for truth and decency. But living in a social system in which privacy does not exist and where those with unorthodox ideas are brainwashed or put to death, he knows there is no hope for him.

A cautionary tale to some, a roadmap to others...
Revisado: 05-17-24
I have no doubt that members of a certain American political party have read this (and Animal Farm) and garnered inspiration, rather than outrage; strategy instead of warning..,. it's interesting to see how the Internet, unforseen by Orwell, prevents this future and yet how powers that be use it to lay the groundwork for New Speak and Double Speak. everyone needs hard copies of these books... just be sure to hide them.

Historia
By the time he was 19, Frank Schaeffer’s parents had achieved global fame as best-selling evangelical authors and speakers, and Frank had joined his father on the evangelical circuit. He would go on to speak before thousands and publish his own best seller. But while coming of age as a rising evangelical star, Schaeffer felt increasingly alienated, and as a result, he experienced a crisis of faith that would ultimately lead to his journey out of the fold - even if it meant losing everything.

Pulls the curtain down on the hypocrisy and pernicious state of those who hide behind the Cross.
Revisado: 01-31-24
I'm at once grateful for the author's willingness to expose and discect the religious right. it helps me frame my approach to dealing with neighbors, family and coworkers who are all in on this set of beliefs. It is a bit of a drudge to work through the author's story, but they do a commendable job, declaring their role in current American politics while still showing respect and reverence to their parents spirit. A good reference for those trying to understand the far right.

An unmatched guide to the religious dimensions of American politics, Jeff Sharlet journeys into corners of our national psyche where others fear to tread. The Undertow is both inquiry and meditation, an attempt to understand how, over the last decade, reaction has morphed into delusion, social division into distrust, distrust into paranoia, and hatred into fantasies—sometimes realities—of violence.

Revisado: 01-31-24
it's just terrifying how people are influenced and how fast they can willingly depart from decency and slide into fear of their neighbor. This is a telling story of your neighbor, relative, and/or elected official. if you're scared by the Right, read this BUT apply it to your reason and grace to share with these fellow citizens. They walked into this madness.... they can find their way out if they are given a chance....

Inspired by her research for the hit podcast Ultra, Rachel Maddow charts the rise of a wild American strain of authoritarianism that has been alive on the far-right edge of our politics for the better part of a century. Before and even after our troops had begun fighting abroad in World War II, a clandestine network flooded the country with disinformation aimed at sapping the strength of the U.S. war effort and persuading Americans that our natural alliance was with the Axis, not against it.

Revisado: 01-31-24
An amazing piece of all but untold American history, helps frame the current state of American politics and our citizenry. I really hope someone buys the option and makes this into a movie. it is so critically important Americans learn about this part of our RECENT past. Kudos for giving us a glimmer of hope in dark times. We'll into my 50s, I've come to accept there will always be authoritarians and Fascists but also, those who stand up and defeat them. if you don't know this story, buy this book.

Too old to be hearing this for the first time.
Revisado: 01-11-23
Douglas' writing delivers an amazing account in a manner that is, at once, foreign in it's delivery due to his mastery of the sentence and adjective, at the same time, in the absence of the aforementioned, could be a tell-all account of the US's current leaders. Not dismissing the strides, changes, and growth, we've made as a nation, I don't see much difference in the hearts of many of it's citizens. It makes me wonder if this evil is more nature than nurture. If you haven't read Douglas or his story, get this book.

Melding neuroscience with narrative, science journalist David Robson takes lstenersi on a deep dive into the many life zones the expectation effect permeates. We see how people who believe stress is beneficial become more creative when placed under strain. We see how associating aging with wisdom can add seven plus years to your life. People say seeing is believing but, over and over, Robson proves that the converse is truer: Believing is seeing.

Excellent for Educators, Medical, & Leaders
Revisado: 01-10-23
I believe this book, if all it's references are valid, is an excellent investment in your time. I see benefit for almost all careers and walks of life, Educators, Medical professionals, leaders alike. It's organized along these subject areas and builds nicely in supporting manner. The performer is good, but the only issue I have is the volume is too low for some reason. A good gift idea as well. I wonder if this subject has room in counseling, law enforcement and Intel.

We live in the age of disinformation - of organized deception. Spy agencies pour vast resources into hacking, leaking, and forging data, often with the goal of weakening the very foundation of liberal democracy: trust in facts. Thomas Rid, a renowned expert on technology and national security, was one of the first to sound the alarm, even before the 2016 election. But this is not new. The story of modern disinformation begins with the clash between communism and capitalism after the Russian Revolution.

History that Never Stopped. Explains so Much
Revisado: 10-20-22
With the caveat that I do not, personally, enjoy Cold War history even though I'm in this line of work, the author asks you early on, to afford him the chance to share history of Subversive Intelligence operations (i.e. "Active Measures") in order to explain today's current political landscape in Post-Trump America. I was NOT expecting to see just how relevant this historical account is to approaching what we're experiencing today. It is an investment in your time but I believe it'll be a foundational investment in how you view, react and interact with your fellow citizens. I also HIGHLY recommend Paxtons "Anatomy of Fascism" and Perlroth's "This is how they tell me the world ends". Highly Recommend if you can donate the time.

The Founding Fathers tried to protect us from the threat they knew, the tyranny that overcame ancient democracy. Today, our political order faces new threats, not unlike the totalitarianism of the twentieth century. We are no wiser than the Europeans who saw democracy yield to fascism, Nazism, or communism. Our one advantage is that we might learn from their experience.

Critical Reading - Concise and Consumable
Revisado: 10-20-22
This audio book seems to consolidate my past two years reading into a succinct, and easily consumable lesson on today's America. I could trace finding my way to this book from Hitchens to Orwell to Paxton' "Anatomy of Fascism" (probably a book you need to listen to or read if you're reading this review) to others including "The Republican Brain", "American Demagogue", "Active Measures", and "Fantasy Land".
On Tyranny is a solid consolidation of how American politics, right of center. So much so, I'm all but convinced today's leaders on the Right have read some of these and took notes. I highly recommend this for reference and found an abridged version printed pocketbook style on Amazon. I got 4 copies to share. NOTE: I posted this same review on Amazon for the hard copy book. NOT endorsed.
