An enjoyable short read (or, in my case, listen).
Since I experienced the audiobook, a word first on narration performance: well done, some interesting takes on the voices, subtle when it needed, good clarity.

Story: I worry this is going to be assumed to be snarky, but it's really not. It's just that the easiest way to describe this book is Hallmark Christmas Movie for the Fantasy set.
It's very cozy. Very romantic. The whole main action is centered around the holiday and involves an idealistic romance. There's very little real danger and no real action, but it's a nice escape into a sweet tale with some good writing about connection.

My main quibble is a personal one: I do not understand female characters who are so apologetic about existing. Like she assumes she's done something wrong and apologizes so easily. The saving grace is that the guy is that way too, rather than being a jerk who makes her think she really DOES have something to apologize for ... but he has a reason for automatically assuming that he has given offense because of his upbringing and coding to be uber polite, but her ... I'm like, dang, girl, who trashed your self-esteem?

But I guess I have known women like this. They exist. This story actually works better for the personality type than other ones do, because as I said, the guy isn't gaslighting her to MAKE her feel guilty. She just keeps doing it to herself.

First off, I recently put down a different middle grade book because the character pretty much acted like a 30-year-old who happened to be short, so it was refreshing to read a book where kids behaved believably like kids. I think that was the strongest aspect, the dialogue and interaction between the kids.
Overall, this is a sweet adventure. Not what I would call particularly harrowing, which probably puts it on the younger end of middle grade. I'd say it would be ideal as a family read aloud (or listen to if, like me, you snag the audiobook) or for kids first through third grade, though there are enough fun aspects that older children might sneak in during story time but pretend not to listen.

The narration was good, clear and engaging. My one nitpick was that the children all had scratchy voices. It wasn't a terrible choice, but there were places it made especially older boy sound like a little old man and could've been toned down a bit.

The only other minor quibble I had was a tonal dissonance between some of the themes and the rest of the story. Overall things are played very cute-fairy tale with not a lot of real world consequences, but then the major conflict becomes about stopping a war which is at the same time treated with some of the cartoonish, "not so serious" handling (the way those who speak of it talk about it, it's more like a spat between playground rivals than something I'd associate with real war) but at the same time you get hints of very serious consequences that make it clear this is a real war where a whole nations might get wiped out--over essentially name calling. Not that war isn't a serious message that shouldn't be handled seriously, but the darkness of implied consequences meshed awkwardly with the playful handling of other aspects in one or two spots.

Over all a fun and playful book with a great take on siblings and realistic young characters.

I enjoyed this second book in the Crockett and Crane series. It probably could be read/listened to out of sequence .It had been about a year since I read book one, and I didn't need a lot of catchup and the story stands alone pretty well though it does continue some conflicts left over from book one.

First off, this book is very funny. I'm starting with that as a positive, but it's also one of the few problems I have with the book. More so in this series than in the companion Beaumont and Beasley, the humor is a little over the top. In the first book, my one negative was that sometimes the jokes stretch on past when they are funny. This one does the same thing in places, but it's more "scenes that should be serious are written with a jokey tone." Not ALL of said serious scenes. There are two he doesn't do this with that definitely hit the hammer down and pull back from the style I'd overall call intentionally over the top/slapstick. Those work really well.
The narration is also bridging on over the top. Some accents are exaggerated bridging on cartoony. I think this is very much a choice, and if you're looking for a Hank the Cowdog experience, you're going to find it here. Some of the seriousness of the plot, though, does clash a little with this delivery. When the scenes are in full on screwball cowboy comedy, it's perfect. When we're dealing with life or death and truly tragic circumstances, sometimes the accents are mildly distracting.

Overall, it was a very fun read I'd recommend, and definitely had an emotional punch that I wasn't necessarily expecting. Good lore/world building additions to the overall mythology from the combine series too.

I received a free copy of this audiobook. This did not influence my review.
